Warnings: just fluffy goodness
Summary: All Sam wants to do is build things, and with you by his side, there is nothing he can't accomplish.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Back in high school, he had convinced you to take a shop class with him, which you did, although he might have enjoyed it more than you did. It was fun to see him get all excited about a new project the two of you would work on. It was always like that: the two of you on every project you had ever received. He would do most of the work only because he loved it too much.
In order to do something, to feel like you weren't just being a freeloader, you let him teach you how to make certain parts that were needed. Even after high school, he still went on to take more shop classes and a lot of architecture classes.
Your major was English, so the two of you had very different schedules, but you made time for one another. He supported your writing, always reading what you had to offer, and you would always use whatever he made even if you couldn't use it every day.
After college, the two of you decided to move in together, and he got to work building the cabinets in almost every room. It was his dream one day to build a house that he wanted to live in, but at the time, he volunteered his time to help build houses for the homeless. Of course, you tagged along in support, but really you just wanted to see how happy he was.
Over the years, you had developed a crush on him. He kind of knew it based on the fact that he knew you too well, but also because he had a crush on you as well. It took a few years for the two of you to admit to anything, but once you got to that stage, you couldn't have been any happier.
He made you the happiest woman on the planet even with all his crazy tendencies to want to build things. Once an apartment became too small for the two of you, he got the idea of actually building the house of your dreams. Not going to lie, it took some hard work. Both you and Sam put blood, sweat, and tears into this project, working day and night to achieve something the two of you wanted.
Often his brother would come out and help, but mostly it was just the two of you alone working on this. Many nights were spent on the house, and you had thought plenty of times that this might not even be worth it. It had taken longer than expected, but he supported you through the tiring journey.
Before you knew it, you were stepping into the house, admiring the work you two did. The land you purchased was bigger than the rest of the area which gave you more room to build the house of your dreams. Once the finished product was done, you had cried that night because it was so beautiful.
All that needed to be done was transferring your furniture from your apartment to this house. Of course, you had to buy more appliances and furniture, but it was worth it. The first official night in the house, you had a party to celebrate. Sam did most of the work, and you couldn't have been prouder.
A few years down the line, he had proposed, and everything couldn't have been more perfect. You two were the "it" couple, you had everything you wanted and needed right in front of you. There was nothing you could have asked for that Sam couldn't provide for you. He was the dream husband, as you were the dream wife.
"When are you coming home?" he asked over the phone. For a few weeks, you had traveled to see your best friend who lived in New York, giving Sam the space he needed as much as you needed girl time.
"On Friday. I know how much you miss me," you teased, not admitting to yourself that you missed him just as much.
"Yes, please come home faster so I'm not sad anymore," he laughed, sounding as if he was out of breath.
"You okay? You're panting."
"Yeah, just went for a jog," he lied smoothly, not wanting you to know what he was really up to. He had been planning this surprise since you bought your plane ticket, and the minute you left for the airport, he had gotten the supplied he needed to get the job done. He could not wait for you to come home and see his hard work.
"Oh, okay, well, it's almost time for dinner, so I'll call you later tonight to say goodnight, okay?"
"Yeah, of course. I love you."
"I love you more," you grinned.
"Not possible."
"Yes possible."
After hanging up, you had gotten ready with a dazed smile that you could not get rid of, even if you wanted to. It's how you two always ended the phone conversation when someone was away. Only a few more days until you can be in each other's arms again.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Okay, so the silence is uncomfortable. What is this surprise?" you asked Sam once he picked you up from your late flight.
"You'll see," he grinned, keeping a tight lid on the secret. After weeks of hard work, he was ready to show you what he had built for you. The ride from the airport to home didn't take that long, and you were stepping into your home not long after.
"Okay, close your eyes," he instructed, you doing as you were told. You knew this house like the back of your hand, so you didn't need Sam as a guide, even though he had one hand on your back and the other in your hand, leading you to the backyard.
"What is it?" you chuckled, stepping onto the fresh grass.
"Okay, wait right here, don't open them yet," he said, his voice getting farther away. It seemed as if time had slowed down, making it drag on longer. "Okay, open."
The first thing you saw was the beautiful fireplace he had built from scratch. It was a thick stone arch with enough space in the middle to have a good amount of wood for a large fire. It hadn't been set yet, but you could already imagine the kind of beauty that would come from it.
"Sam, you made this?" you gasped, admiring the labor he put into it.
"Yeah, I wanted to surprise you. I know you've said you wanted a fireplace out here, and it's getting colder which means warm nights."
"It's perfect," you grinned, jumping into his arms and gave him a passionate kiss. He kissed you back, just enjoying being in the moment before pulling away.
"I'm glad you like it. It's getting dark, want to light it?"
"Yeah!" you nodded enthusiastically, taking a seat on the outdoor patio furniture you bought. They were comfortable and plush and comforted every side of you as you sunk into the material. Watching Sam set the fire, he joined you once he was done. The wind had picked up a bit, but it didn't matter since the warmth of the fire warmed your body.
"I missed this," you muttered, cuddling into his body.
"I missed you," he responded, wrapping his arm around your body. Nothing could ruin this moment... nothing.
