"Because there could be two places in which hostages could be found, I am going to need you two to split up," the Colonel said strictly. Everyone who knew you and Dean knew that it was best to have you two together. The two of you had been partners ever since you both got enlisted into the army. However, he was the colonel and he was not to be argued with.
"Yes sir," you nodded once after exchanging glances with Dean.
"Scope out the place, do your damn job, make sure no hostages are killed. Understand?"
"Yes sir," you and Dean both said.
"Good, move out."
This was always the hardest part of your job. Fighting the enemy line, killing those who wish to attack your country, you were trained in situations like these. Dealing with the hostages, there could never be enough training in the world to handle them. They were unpredictable because they were scared, and when people are scared, they do things you could not even imagine.
However, an order is an order even if you have to go without your best friend. Before you two even thought about enlisting, you'd been best friends since grade school. Everything you two could possibly do together, you did. It didn't matter if it was a personal issue or not. When the two of you worked together, you could accomplish almost anything.
It was in high school when Dean first brought up the idea that he wanted to be in the army. Recruiters came by that week to try and convince as many kids as they could that being in the army is something worth fighting for. Not many kids saw what Dean did, but when he got that look in his eyes, that i-am-going-to-do-whatever-it-takes look, you knew that you wanted to join too. It may not have been your interest at the time, but you certainly don't regret it.
When you both enlisted, it was torture trying to find out if the two of you were going to be on the same branch, much less the same boot camp. Luck was on your side that day and every day henceforth because the two of you have never been separated ever since that acceptance letter came in the mail.
Thinking back, maybe it should have been a warning sign when the Colonel told you to separate from Dean, but you had a job to do, and if you fucked it up, then that's on you. A guilty conscious is something that you just couldn't live with.
Suiting up, you made sure that every nook and cranny of yourself was going to be protected. Who knows what you might find in those houses. All the hostages could be dead for all you know... if there were any hostages to begin with. Grabbing your gun, you went through the routine check before heading over to Dean to wish him luck.
"Hey, good luck out there."
"This is the first time we're separated," he commented.
"The Colonel must be nuts," you joked.
"Seriously though, don't die out there, okay?" he asked.
"Same goes for you."
Dean leaned down and kissed your cheek before grabbing his gun and heading out. The base camp where you two were located wasn't that far from the two hostage points where you needed to be. As soon as the time called for it, you and Dean both headed in different directions with only one thought in mind.
