My eyes light up as Nathan walks through the door. He smiles a little, noticing.

"How was your walk?" I ask quietly as he sits on the couch beside me. I nestle into the crook of his arm as if it was an instinct.

"Good. You should get to know Wend-- I mean... uh... Gwen. You guys would be good friends," he answers quietly. I just shrug, rubbing the leather case of my sketch book with my thumb. I can tell it's a habit of mine, seeing the worn case and its faded marks.

He switches on the TV, and I watch dully. The flickering lights in the slowly darkening room is soothing. My eyelids droop.

"Wanna take a walk tomorrow? The Spirit Festival starts then," Nathan offers.

"Sure," I reply.

"Anything else you'd like to do?"

"I don't care."

He strokes the golden strands of hair that fall out of my braid, making me smile a little. But it quickly turns into a frown, and tears begin to fill my eyes. Nathan's gaze widens with alarm.

"What's wrong, Rose?" He asks gently.

"They're all coming back! It's too much! So.... so many bad ones..." I reply almost angrily, covering my hands with my face. Nathan knows I'm talking about the memories. He seems to always know what I'm thinking or talking about. Especially since I'm not very good at providing specifics.

"Hey," he says in a soothing voice. He gently moves my hands so he can see my eyes. I stare at him, unable to keep the electricity from pulsing through my body. "It'll be okay," he whispers.

Of course, our faces have been inches from each other's dozens of times. But it was either because I was about to give him a halfhearted kiss, or he just did it to make me feel better.

But this time, having eyes locked with his, I notice something. He has a small scar on the bridge of his nose. For a fleeting moment, I wonder how he got it. But now, I want to know everything about this boy, even though I already know so much. But mostly, I want the sensation of his lips pressed upon mine.

Just as the feeling becomes almost unbearable, Nathan's lips meet mine. The warmth of his mouth sends a current running through my body. I wrap my arms around Nathan's neck as I lose myself in his peppermint breath and soft lips.

But just like that. The perfect moment ends. I begin to pull away, suddenly aware of my surroundings.

I'm still a prisoner here I think dryly.
