“Jana,” she said, touching her arm, “can you give this message to Mia?”

“What is it?”

“She’ll know what to do, but it’s a very important message.”

“But what’s going on?”

“I’m doing my last client before I disappear for a while.”

Jana took the message Rachel handed her, heart pounding in her chest.

“To whom she should give it to?”

“She knows what to do. Don’t worry.”

“Rachel… I… I don’t want to be involved in all your stories…”

“Don’t worry.”

She looked around her. Nobody was watching. Richard was still talking with her future client and the rest of the people drooled at the sight of the show. She took Jana by the shoulders and looked straight into her eyes.

“Give her this message, but be very careful. Okay?”

“I’m afraid…”

“Did he make you take something?”

Jana hesitated to answer, looking away. But Rachel insisted, shaking a little. She already knew the answer and it saddened her.

“No!” she murmured. “Don’t accept anything from him, please.”

“But why?”

“Richard is one of the most dangerous men. Don’t approach him, please. Do it for me.”

“Don’t ask me that… I love him…”

The young woman began to cry, hiding her face in her hands. Rachel pulled her into her arms to comfort her. She whispered a few words to calm her down. She asked her again not to accept anything from Richard. Jana was still sobbing, but she did everything she could to calm down. She mumbled that she promised.

“I’ll call you later,” Rachel said.

Then she stepped away from her, taking a very professional look. Jana wiped her tears with the back of her hand. She trembled a little. She took deep breaths before searching the room. She spotted Mia after a while. The girl was talking to a man richly dressed. She leaned against the bar and laughed at everything he seemed to say. Jana took all her courage and went to her. She clutched the piece of paper against her chest as if she was afraid that someone would steal it. The more she approached, she could hear the conversation. Mia was charming him.

“You’re very pretty,” the man murmured, stroking her arm with his fingertips. “Are you free?”

“Ah! Would you like to do something?”

“Yes, maybe…”

Jana patted Mia’s shoulder.

“Mia? I’ve got to talk to you now. It’s very important.”

Mia smiled through gritted teeth.

“I’m busy here.”

“It’s about Rachel.”

Mia frowned, looking at Jana. She could see the puffiness of her colleague’s eyes. She asked her companion to wait a moment while she talks with Jana. He merely nodded and the two young women moved away from the bar. Without further hesitation, Jana gave him the piece of paper that Rachel had given him. Mia frowned eyebrows again, uncertain to understand.

“Richard wants you to take care of Rachel’s next customer.”

“But why me?”

Jana vigorously shook her head before cringe. She replied that she couldn’t tell her more. Before leaving, she whispered to her to be very careful. Mia gave her an uncertain glance and she looked down at the paper. Her heart began to pound in her chest. Rachel had warned that this time would come soon. Was it now? She turned to her companion, who was still at the bar and whispered in his ear that she hoped to see him again, but she had to do something immediately. He nodded, smiling at her.
