We met inside with everyone and they left two empty seats at the center of the table. A bottle of champagne was already being passed around as everyone filled their glasses.
"Cheers to the birthday boy!" Kat exclaimed and everyone held their glasses to cheer before drinking the contents.
"I just wanted to thank all of you for coming out tonight to celebrate. I know things have been a little crazy this year, but I'm thankful to have such a wonderful group of people surrounding me. And who needs a gift when I've got her at my side?" Colby said with a smirk as he rested his hand on my thigh. "I love you, Soph."
"I love you, Colby." He leaned over and gently pressed his lips to mine for a second.
"I actually have something for you." He said, causing me to furrow my brow. "It's your birthday, aren't we supposed to be gifting you?"
He chuckled and shook his head. "I wanted to save it for today."
"Okay then.. what is it?" I watched as he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small box. "Colby.."
"Relax, Soph. It's not a proposal this soon." He said which caused me to let out a little laugh. "Even though you do have me wrapped around your finger."
He opened the small box which had a little diamond ring inside. "It's a promise ring. I know things are still fairly fresh, but I can tell I'm gonna be spending the rest of my life with you. This is my promise to you. Just me and you against the world, babygirl."
He slipped the ring on my ring finger and I watched as a cheesy grin formed on his lips.
"Colby, it's beautiful." I raised my hand to look at the ring for a moment before reaching out to cup my hands on his cheeks and press my lips to his for a kiss. There was so much love behind it.
"I love you so much." I said it quiet enough that only he could hear. "I love you more." He pecked my lips once more before setting the box down on the table and resting his hand back on my thigh.
I couldn't help but zone out and admire the beautiful ring that he got me. Because if this was just a promise ring, who knows what the engagement ring would look like one day.
The rest of the dinner with everyone went fairly smooth.
"Oh god, please spare me the embarrassment." Colby groaned and put his hands over his face as the waitresses came over with a piece of cake singing 'Happy Birthday'.
We obviously joined along and clapped, because why not? "Happy birthday dear Colbyyy, happy birthday to youuu! And many moreeee!"
He blew out the candle and Jake couldn't help but ask. "What did you wish for?"
"He's not supposed to tell you!" Tara said, slacking his chest.
"For that to never happen again."
"We'll that's never going to come true now." Kat said, finishing her glass of champagne.
"I think we should start heading out, we'll see you back at the house?" Sam said as he stood up from his chair, and everyone else started to follow suit.
"I'll see you there brother. Thanks for coming to dinner guys." Colby said before taking a bite of the chocolate cake in front of him.
I decided it was best to drink more water than anything during the dinner since I would be driving Colby to the party. He had no idea, but I had to get him back to my place somehow.
The purpose of everyone leaving early was to make sure that Kian, JC, Brennen, and Kevin got the house decorated and set up just perfectly.
My neighbors might hate me tonight, but that's a risk I'm willing to take.
"We'll baby, how does it feel to be twenty-five?" I asked as I reached out and ran my fingers through the back of his hair.
"Would it be too early to have a quarter century crisis?" He asked, causing me to chuckle.
"How about we give it one full day at least." I teased.
I let Colby finish his cake as I signed for the bill. "I'm gonna run to the restroom and we can head out."
"Okay baby." He smiled softly in my direction as I got up and maneuvered my way through the restaurant to the bathroom.
While doing my business I checked my phone to see Kat text to let me know they were ready for us.
I was so excited.
I just really hoped he loved the surprise because there was quite a few in store for my birthday boy.
I got myself situated and washed my hands before heading back over to Colby.
"Ready?" He nodded. "As ready as I'll ever be." He laced his fingers with mine and we made our way to the front entrance to leave, and I heard him pull the car keys out of his pocket and quickly snatched them.
"Soph, I barely even drank." He said in a whine. "Nope, I want to drive."
He didn't rebuttal, instead he actually let me have this one for a change. I let go of his hand and made my way to the drivers side and unlocked the car so we could both get in.
I buckled my seatbelt and started the car, backing out of the parking spot as Colby reconnected his Bluetooth and put on "California Love" by Tupac. One of our favorite songs to sing in the car.
I could feel Colby lean closer to me as he sang; and I just shrugged it off with a little laugh. There was nothing that I loved more than to know he was happy.
"Californiaaaa loveeeeee." He sang before peppering kisses along my jaw. "Colby, I'm driving!"
"So she can dish it out but can't take it, hm?" ...He had a point. But I was already nervous about the surprise, so I really didn't want to get too distracted.
A few minutes passed by and he was how tracing shapes on my leg and I could feel my heart start to race because we were only a block away from my house.
"Are we going the right way?" He asked. "What? Do you not trust me? We're just taking a little scenic route, that's all."
"I trust you babe, just curious. I haven't been in this neighborhood before."
I let out a quiet sigh and made a left turn into my driveway and parked the car.
"Where are we, Soph?"
I shut the car off and unbuckled my seatbelt, glancing over at Colby.
"Welcome to surprise number one. Your birthday party is being held at my house."
