- Chapter 34: Undertaking -
Hideki bit out an angered growl as he slammed a closed fist down on the bar top (his drink disturbed). Thick brows permanently knit together as he ran a strong hand down his face. It's been weeks and she still won't answer the fucking phone?!
"Oh, looks like someone's mad." Leighton cooed from a safe distance. "Who did it now? Oh! Was it that shape shifter guy from-"
"Shut up." The brute ordered, his tone a mixture of tired and irritated simultaneously. She had never acted so stubborn, and he watched that girl grow up. This was ridiculous, she was being ridiculous!
Leighton's expression softened. "Is this about Sunako again?" When there came no immediate answer, he continued. "You know, I'm sure she's doing just-"
Hideki whipped his head around at break neck speed, his golden eyes caught the dim light the bar had to offer. "Then she should answer her fucking phone!" Had anyone else seen the look on his face in that moment they'd may mistake it for feral vexation, but truthfully it was all concern and desperate confusion, maybe even a hint of helplessness (and Hideki did not do well with that).
Leighton pouted petulantly and puffed up his chest in defiance. "Well, you're the one who told her to leave her life in Japan!" He threw his scrawny arms out theatrically in accusation.
The ravenette snarled in defense. "Yeah! To keep her safe!"
"She's not a baby!" The blonde retorted, his pale cheeks flushed rose as his cochlear implant stabbed him with feedback. He swiped at it, pulling it from his head (it caught some of his tangled hair).
"Boys, boys. I'm sure our little sun is as well as she can be. Stop bickering." Kallen sauntered into the room, fixing his cuff as he did so. Emerald eyes found their way to Hideki as he glared. "Have some faith in our dearest, or have you forgotten?"
Hideki rose to full height abruptly, the bar stool was sent clattering to the ground. "That is all in the past Kallen, and you know it." His tone was bold, flat, and conveyed an unspoken threat. Broad shoulders heaved with how his nostrils flared to allow in more oxygen.
Kallen's sharp eyes pierced him in spite. He'd never outright admit it to anyone, but he was bitter, beyond that even. Sunako was dear to him. She was dear to all of them, that much was certain, but... "Weather you want to acknowledge it or not does not change it." He spoke eloquently as a gloved hand clasped firmly around his angular shoulder, though it was not in malice.
Damon exchanged knowing looks with Kallen before speaking up. "He's right Hideki. You should really have more faith in her." His eyes laid on his form knowingly, as if trying to get across a silent message with not an ounce of negativity. Then again, Damon was too calm and collected for his own good sometimes.
The sound of a door opening caught all of their attention in the tense silence and through waltzed Liu, ethereal as always. "Oh? Quarreling are we? What of?" His smile crept upon his snake eyes creepily.
"What bought you here of all places?" Kallen affronted with a snap of his tongue. Damon had since left the ebony man in favor of sitting.
Liu twirled a piece of ashen hair between his spindly fingers jocularly, his smiled remained even after Kallen's snark, his snake tongue slithered between his fangs frolicsomely. "Cravings of Baijiu. Now, what of our flower bud should I know?" His predatory eyes narrowed (putting even Kallen's emerald stare to shame).
"Hideki is worried about Sunako." Leighton sputtered out nervously as he fumbled with his implant. All heads turned to him incredulously. Embarrassment flooded his boyish body. "...Sorry." He muttered, averting his gaze in favor of his feet.
