- Chapter 24: Repeal of Respite -

To Sunako's surprise the couch (despite the abundance of cat hair) was quite comfortable. Her only regret being that she hadn't asked for a blanket. Sunako could suffice without a pillow however.

The ravenette shivered as a blast of cool air nipped her pale, wounded skin. Does she need to have it this cold? There's no reason for the temperature to be so low! We already work in a cold hospital, so why now too?! She huffed, knowing there was nothing she could do about it other than suffer and bear through it.

All was quiet throughout the house considering Aya and her precious feline were now asleep, their brainwaves having gone silent. Sunako finally could rest her overworked brain for once. She could finally be spared from other's brainwaves even if it was just for a moment. It was a troublesome and inconvenient quirk. She hated it, but guessed she'd have to make do. She was blessed to have a quirk at all, so she'd avoid complaining.

Sunako's breathing evened out as her eyelids grew heavier with each passing second. The blue eyed woman sucked in a steady breath as she allowed her eyes to droop close (though some of the light still shined through dully). So tired... She exhaled, allowing her body to ease.

She almost, just barely, slipped into an unconscious state before she was ripped back to reality with a startle courtesy of her phone ringing obnoxiously loud.

"Are you fucking kidding me?" She growled with malice as she pushed herself up into a sitting position. In her sudden annoyed state she expelled a small brainwave that disturbed the things around her ever so slightly. Calm down Sunako. She groaned as she ran a hand over her face. You should've expected this. Like, really you should have. C'mon.

Sunako plucked the small device off the coffee table (albeit reluctantly) and stared down at the long string of numbers. This looks kinda familiar. Sunako narrowed her eyes in thought. Who?

Part of her considered just letting it go to voicemail, but she couldn't do that in good conscious and begrudgingly answered in the final ring.

"Hello?" She greeted frankly and flatly as she ran a hand through her messy hair. Her fingers barely made it through causing her to cringe in both discomfort at the disarray of her hair and because hair pulling was never her forte (especially when there were knots galor).

The other end was silent for a few moments and (for a split second) Sunako thought whoever had called (unfortunately) had the wrong number before a familiar voice broke the stagnate silence.

"Sunako?" Hideki's deep voice came through with a hoarse croak.

Sunako's heart clenched for a moment causing her to lose her breath as she mouthed inaudible words. She had missed his voice and a few days ago she thought she'd never hear it again. She thought she'd never hear anyone's voice ever again.

"Sunny is that you? Are you okay? Hey!" Leighton's strained, yet excitable voice came. "It's Leighton- Hey don't hit me!"

Were... were they worried about me? "Hey guys. I..." She sighed as a smile crept onto her lips. "I've missed you all." Her sapphire eyes teared up as she let out a small chuckle.

"Are you okay?" Leighton piped up again, his tone wavering slightly as he did, but never losing its volume.

The tremble in his tone made Sunako's heart ache with more guilt knowing she was the cause of his unneeded distress. She hadn't heard him sound like that since she was seventeen and it was still just as heart wrenching as it was back then (and it wasn't like he looked any different either).
