- Chapter 12: Lies, Lies, Lies -
Sunako gulped back a growing lump in her constricting throat as her foot shifted back a few centimeters, away from the detective. What do I say?! I can't just tell him I basically agreed to become a league member! Her breathing hitched. It feels like the walls are closing in on me... Breath Sunako. Breath. She trembled as she balled her fists up.
"Ms.Himura," the detective's stern voice pulled Sunako from her tidal wave of a mind. "I'm going to need you to answer." He spared a moment to glance at his clearly expensive wrist watch.
"I heard you," she managed. "I- I just need to think. Give me a minute." Sunako drew in a sharp breath through her flared nose and huffed it out. Were there this many brainwaves earlier? Why does it feel like there's more? Oh my God, it feels like my head is going to explode. She screwed her eyes shut in a futile attempt at blocking out the brainwaves molesting her. I can't just say that. But, he'll know if I'm lying... she re-opened her glassy eyes, her gaze in favor of the detective's sleek, black shoes and not his face. But, what other choice do I have...?
"I," Sunako started hesitantly as she un-clenched her fists and twiddled her thumbs. Nail marks resided in her palms. "I don't remember really. I was sorta running on pure adrenaline that day. Night, I mean. Sorry if that's not much help." She gave a nervous smile. I'm sorry for having to lie to you... it's not like I want to, but, "To be perfectly honest, I don't really recall much of that night at all." I have to...
"Hm." The detective hummed as his gaze bored into Sunako, making her stiff and rigid. He was staring at her with a gaze that screamed accusations and the knowledge of the lies. His brows drew closer together and if his beady black eyes could bore into her any more, then he'd be looking directly through her. "Alright then. Thank you for your time Ms.Himura."
He's... she released a breath that had built up in her. He's not going to ask? Or call me out? But, "Y-yes. No problem. Have a nice night." Sunako stammered as she watched the detective's sold form retreat down the hall. He knows. Doesn't he...?
Once the taller authority figure was completely out of sight Sunako heaved out another tense sigh as her shoulders rolled forward and she hunched. If she was tired before, she was exhausted now. Mental strain was one thing Sunako did not handle well. I just wanna go home. Ugh. She retrieved her cracked phone from her pocket and clicked it on. The screen brightened and displayed the time along with several unimportant notifications which she neglected to clear. 8:07pm already? Yeesh. She pocketed the phone once more. I gotta go get that money now.
Detective Tsukauchi's heels beat the tiled floor heavily as he made his out of the overly active hospital. She lied. She definitely lied. His eyebrows knit together in thought as he watched concrete parking lot. What reason would she have for lying? Maybe if she were questioned by someone other than myself she'd open up. He pinched his chin.
Detective Tsukauchi had been lied to many times in his life, more so than any normal person would encounter. The black haired man wanted to seduce that Sunako had given him a trauma induced white lie, but he couldn't shake the growing feeling that it was something more. Fear maybe? But, she didn't look scared. Nervous? Apprehensive? Pinching the bridge of his strongly defined nose, he groaned as he reached his sleek black car worthy of a detective's salary.
"You look stressed. I take it things didn't go too well?" His partner asked him from the passenger's seat. Straightening his back, he turned to gaze completely at his superior. His well ironed button down tugged.
