FORTY ONE
"YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME." Annalise muttered to herself.Remi Blake was waiting outside the locker room after practice had ended. James and her usually stayed after for a couple minutes to discuss future practices and things they could improve on, and then walked back to the Gryffindor common room together. It was their thing.
But tonight, Remi Blake was waiting outside the locker room. James smiled at her, before turning to Annalise. "You can go ahead, don't wait up. I'll be a while." He stalked off in Remi's direction.
"Wait." She blurted, before James could walk away. James turned around expectantly waiting for the rest of her sentence. "Don't we have to figure out the practice schedule for the next week?"
James waved it off. "We can figure that out later." He turned back around, and Annalise watched him and Remi walk off and around the corner.
Annalise was fuming, storming all the way back to the Gryffindor tower. It was times like these where she missed their fake relationship more than anything.
She shoved past a few first years who were walking like a group of sloths. Man, she wanted to rip the stupid blonde hair off of Remi Blake's stupid head.
"Pumpernickel." She said irritatedly at the fat lady, who simply glared at her.
"Well, someone's very rude today." She huffed, crossing her arms. "You could ask nicely."
"Pumpernickel." Annalise snapped, not in the mood to play nice.
The Fat Lady started scolding her and Annalise wanted to scream in frustration before a few more students appeared behind her and she was forced to open the portrait hole for them. The common room was almost empty, most students already heading to dinner. Roxy hadn't gone up for a shower yet as she sat with Alex by the fireplace.
Annalise stormed over to them, about to explode with anger.
"Woah, woah, I can practically see the fumes coming out of your ears." Roxy joked as she sat down next to her.
"I'm losing it. Do you fucking see how she's practically attached herself to him. It's like the universe is against me." Annalise grabbed the pillow on the couch, screaming into it in frustration.
"Uh context?" Roxy asked, while Alex just stared at her with a scared and confused look on his face.
"Remi fucking Blake." Annalise explained, and realization immediately flashed across both Roxy and Alex's faces. "She was waiting for James after practice. And he walked with her. That's our thing. He always walks with me!"
Her friends just stared at her. Annalise sighed. "I know, I sound like a child throwing a temper tantrum. And the thing is, I don't even blame her. I mean what fucking girl in this school wouldn't want to date James Potter if they had the chance."
"I'm sorry, I know this is serious but I cannot believe these words are coming out of your mouth." Roxy gaped at her. Alex was silent, simply following along with the conversation.
"If you would have told first through fifth year me that I'd be in love with James Potter, I would have thought you had been smacked in the head with a quaffle and has serious brain damage." Annalise chuckled dryly. "I cannot believe this is happening to me."
She grabbed the pillow, and screamed into it once again. She looked up to see a few Gryffindor students staring and whispering at her. "Do you need something?" She said loudly in their direction. "Because if you do, stop staring and open your mouths!" She glared at them, as their eyes widened and they quickly scampered off. Roxy and Alex looked at with a slightly frightened expression on their faces. Annalise realized she was being rude—and acting a little crazy.
"I'm sorry Lise." Roxy patted her on the back as Annalise rested her head on her friend's shoulder. "I know the feeling and it sucks."
Annalise shrugged. "I'll get over it. Eventually. But damn, this really really sucks."
"Why don't you just tell him how you really feel." Roxy insisted. "He clearly doesn't know."
"Because he clearly doesn't feel the same way!" Annalise groaned. "If he did, he wouldn't be hanging out with Remi every single waking moment of every single goddamn day!"
She sighed before picking herself off the couch. "I'll grab a shower and then we can head to dinner." Roxy nodded, and Annalise trudged her way to her room, the anger shifting into a numb feeling of resignation.
Annalise disappeared up the staircase. Not even a few seconds later, Roxy turned to face Alex. She narrowed her eyes at him. "You know something."
"What are you talking about?" Alex responded, not understanding where she was going with this conversation.
"You sat here silently while Annalise complained about James and Remi. That's not like you. You always have something or the other to say." Roxy pointed out accusingly.
"I have no idea what you're talking about. I was just trying to be a good listener." He lied.
"Spill." Roxy wasn't falling for it.
"I can't." He sighed.
"Why not." Roxy pressed on.
"Because I made promises."
"James totally likes Annalise doesn't he." Roxy gasped.
"What? What are you talking about." Alex tried to deflect the conversation,
"Oh please." She rolled her eyes. "It's so incredibly obvious. And you know that's why you were silent. Yet you aren't telling Annalise." She questioned.
"As much as I would love to meddle in this situation-trust me I'm losing my mind right now-this is something James and Annalise have to figure out themselves. I don't want to risk messing anything up." Alex explained, having thought over this dilemma several times in his head.
"How could it get worse than this?" Roxy exclaimed. "Annalise is miserable and James is a step away from making Remi his girlfriend."
Alex ran his hand through his hair in frustration. "I don't understand James right now. I don't know what he's doing and the problem is, I can't read his feelings."
"If he liked Annalise why the hell is he getting close with Remi. Do you think he actually likes Remi?" Roxy pressed on.
"I don't know Roxy." He was telling the truth. He had no idea what James was thinking sometimes. "I don't even think James knows. But like I said, if we say something to either one of them about their feelings we could risk messing it up even further."
"I just wish Annalise would just tell him how she feels!" Roxy groaned in frustration. "I've been begging her to say something for weeks, but she's too scared."
Alex nodded his head in understanding. "I told James to initially tell her how he feels too, but he wouldn't budge. And now, I don't know what he's doing with this whole Remi situation or what he's feeling." He paused before continuing. "Both of them are confused. They need to figure out themselves first before they figure out their relationship."
Roxy sighed in defeat. "You're right. Never thought I'd be taking advice from you. "
Alex chuckled. "I told you that you guys ought to start listening to me more."
"Don't push it Alex."
