~Amelia's POV~
The evening rolled around and Levi and I were eating dinner together. I had piled up my plate with double the amount as he had. I was ravenous after all of that swimming and I don't think that Levi had much of an appetite to begin with. He was silent yet restless the whole time we were dining. His left leg impatiently bounced up and down and only gave me one-worded responses when I tried to converse with him. Eventually, I gave up and left him to his thoughts. I knew that despite his emotionless exterior, he cared for his comrades and him being here whilst they were putting their lives in danger, had him on edge. And rightfully so after his tortured past.
I had heard everything about his past from Furlan. How he was orphaned and left to starve in the underground. Then taken in by a man who then tried to kill him when he grew up. How Erwin forced him to be a part of the Scouts. How he lost his two best friends on their first expedition and recently all of his squad. He was right to be worried about the only people he had left.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" Levi was scowling at me, arms folded.
Fluttering my eyes in surprise, I adverted my eyes away from him. "Erm, no reason. Let's get going," I dismissed, not wanting him to realise that I was secretly pitying him.
I got up from my seat, grabbed my tray with my dirty plate and took it over to be washed. Levi followed behind me, doing the same and then walking over to the exit. "I guess I'll be seeing you tomorrow then, Corporal," I bid him goodbye and headed in the direction of my room.
Levi didn't reply and went back to his office. On my way back, I tried to figure out what to do with the rest of my day. I'd caught up on some of my sleep and knew I wouldn't be tired for another few hours or so. My room only contained the bare essentials so it had nothing to keep me entertained. However, it did have a couple of random books on one of the shelves. They weren't my usual genre but they were better than nothing.
I spent the next several hours lazing around on my bed, reading until the words started to blur together. Despite expending a lot of my pent-up energy from swimming this morning, I was restless. I simply couldn't stay put anymore. My life had been far too exciting recently for me to sit here and do nothing. I could try and work out in my bedroom but there was no space for it. Then, I got the amazing idea to sneak out of my room and secretly go to the training grounds. It was dark outside now and most people were back inside of their rooms so I was unlikely to be caught. Plus, I was only on the second floor and could easily climb out of my window with little repercussions.
First, I needed some more incognito clothing. Something that I could train in too. Even though I wasn't doing anything particularly wrong, it would be pretty suspicious if the person that Levi was supposed to be guarding was caught sneaking out of her room without permission. I would be sent to Levi who was already mad at me for not being back on time from my little excursion this morning. And who knew what my punishment would be for going out without Levi's permission? Not something I wanted to find out.
I stood in front of my wardrobe, questioning whether my plan was actually too stupid and whether I should just stay in my room. Then, I remembered how insane I was going from the silence and lack of doing anything and decided to still go ahead with it.
Scouring my wardrobe for something appropriate, I ended up choosing a black shirt and trousers with shorts underneath. It still wasn't warm enough to go out in just the shorts but I knew that I would overheat in trousers, so this was the solution.
Now, that I had chosen my clothing, I had to assess the best way to get to the training grounds without being spotted. That meant observing the patterns of the guards on night watch and then trying to figure out how to safely climb out of my window without making any noise to alert anyone.
