~Amelia's POV~
---- 854 ----
Another two years passed as the war continued to rage on between Marley and the Mid-East Allied Forces—another two years of waiting for when the war inevitably ended and we faced total annihilation. However, despite the lack of action, Paradis Island became even more developed with an impressive arsenal of weapons and infrastructure for such a small island.
As a result, my continued work with Yelena and Onyankopon left me with little time for the Scouts. So, whilst struggling to balance my duties as a soldier and a developer, I decided to take temporary leave from the Scouts. It was hard to leave my comrades behind after how close we had gotten, or more like trauma-bonded. Nevertheless, I was passionate about the development work and wanted to pursue it further.
However, that did mean I had to interact with Yelena more frequently. Luckily, after the day on the docks when she met Eren, she started leaving me alone. Gone were the days when I was subjected to her long stares or her insisting the two of us spend time alone together. Despite the positive outcome, I couldn't help but be suspicious of the sudden lack of attention. Regardless, I wasn't going to complain. It made my work day a hell of a lot easier without having to actively avoid someone the whole time.
Then, after a year or so, my work took me away from the docks and I never had to see her again. I received an offer from one of the professors at the top medical school in the Inner Walls to finish my medical training. He had been present in one of the meetings I was in about a different development project and we had gotten talking and then he offered me a place. I instantly said yes as it was my dream to finish my medical training and officially become a doctor. However, it meant that I would be seeing the Scouts even less than I had been. But worst of all, Furlan and I would be separated.
He had finally found a purpose after his long years in his Titan body using his strength to help build up Paradis Island. So, he didn't want to follow me to the Walls where he would have no place. Yet, he didn't want to hold me back from my dreams either so I went without him.
After six months, I rapidly finished my medical training. Then, I received another offer to work alongside the professors at the Inner Walls' medical school and I took it. We completely revamped the schooling and training system for new doctors on Paradis Island by incorporating modern medical practice into the curriculum. For the first time in years, I actually felt some fulfilment in my life. It felt good to rely on my brain rather than my body and whilst I continued to train in secret to maintain my skills as a soldier, I felt myself drifting further and further away from the Scouts and Furlan.
As I held a letter in my hand with the Scout regiment's official seal on the back, I pondered how long it had been since I had last seen my squad.
Dear Amelia,
Sorry to be all formal with a letter. I apologise if it scared you, but we have trying to call your radio for the last two weeks! I say this with the utmost sadness but your expertise as a soldier is needed again. I promised you that I would only take you away from your work in the worst-case scenario and I believe that it is now that time. I have received news from our correspondence in Marley that the war between Marley and the Mid-East Allied forces has come to an end. Around the same time we got the news, Eren went rogue and ventured into Marley on his own. Only now have we received news of his whereabouts and he has gone and decided on his own that it is time for us to go to war with them. As you can see, a lot has happened in your absence and every soldier is needed now more than ever.
I will give you until tomorrow to pack up your things. Hopefully, that is enough time to get yourself in order. Our time is quickly running out so that is all I can give you. I will have Levi pick you up tomorrow morning and he can explain everything on the train ride over. Despite the circumstances, I am excited to see my best friend again after almost a year!
