~Amelia's POV~

Two months passed after the incident between Levi and I and since that day, we had hardly seen each other. He decided to distance himself from me, throwing himself completely into his work. Whereas I was busing myself with my 3DMG training and Hange's experiments.

Yet it wasn't like we didn't see each other at all. Our squad has been helping Historia where we can. Mostly just doing the manual labour whilst Historia ordered us around. So Levi and I should have been interacting all of the time but that was solemn the case. We exchanged pleasantries when we saw each other and engaged in small talk. But, he hardly attended my training sessions like he used to and left me to teach myself. My 3DMG skills have been coming along nicely even without his guidance. I was essentially on a similar level to the other cadets now.

My mind-reading skills had also improved by no end. I visited Furlan regularly with Hange and even had some sessions with Eren in between his own training. I could now hear their thoughts about a metre away without any contact. I also discovered I could hear even further when a surface connected us, like the ground or a wall much like how sound travelled faster through solids. It was fascinating that a power which could be considered magical obeyed the laws of physics.

Speaking of Furlan, I had spoken to him about Levi. Surprisingly, he had been pretty chill about it. I had expected him to hate me for revealing his secret without permission. However, he understood I hadn't done it on purpose and betrayed his trust. So, he forgave me quickly and we moved on. But he still didn't want Levi to see him. I respected his decision, of course. It wasn't like Levi had come begging me to see him either as he was still avoiding me like the plague.

Levi's avoidance annoyed me to no end. It wasn't like we'd actually kissed. His eyes had simply glanced at my lips and that he was considering it. We were both considering it. But that didn't mean anything. One kiss wouldn't have meant a lifetime of commitment or anything. We were just two people who were attracted to each other and, it wasn't like either of us had the time or energy for a relationship. If I could tell him it meant nothing, we could move on like adults and alleviate the awkwardness. But of course, Levi wouldn't let me have the chance to talk to him and decided to stop talking to me instead.

However, now wasn't the time to dwell on fractured relationships. It was time to celebrate before our expedition to reclaim Wall Maria tomorrow.

"This may be a special night, but... let's not let the public find out! Behave like soldiers without causing a ruckus!" An older Scout cheered, holding his third pint of ale in the last hour—a ruddy hue on his cheeks from the alcohol. I was holding off on the alcohol due to my low tolerance and the weight of tomorrow on my mind. Tomorrow we will go to Shiganshina, the day we may find out what's in the basement, and god knows what truths we will face there.

"Eh, meat?" Connie and Sasha's eyes had glassed over at the sight. I couldn't remember the last time I'd had any meat since I'd joined the Scouts. It was weird to say that I'd had it more outside of the Walls, a place that was supposed to be desolate. But with the lack of human activity, it was filled with animals and made hunting easy- especially if you had a Titan to do most of the work for you.

"Am I dreaming?" Sasha pinched herself, restraining the urge to devour the entirety of the meat.

"Tonight's the night before we retake Wall Maria! Cheers!" he finished. Everyone erupted from their seats, howling like wolves and ready to devour all the meat and booze in front of them.

I remained in my seat and observed the chaos. I wasn't going to say no if someone offered me a piece, but I wasn't desperate enough to fight for it. Besides, it was way more entertaining to watch people falling over each other over such a small hunk of meat.
