"Ryn, it's good to see you." Ra said, nodding his head in my direction, and my mood soured when I saw him. That night the rest of the test subjects arrived. With only a couple of days of testimonies and evaluations left, everyone was anxious. Of course, it didn't help when Glee came the following day with Ra and Nohorr in tow.
"Can't say the same." I bite back, baring my teeth at him in annoyance. The reason he was allowed to walk amongst us was a mystery. One that I'm sure The Planetary Council wasn't interested in sharing.
"Come on now, that's not how you treat your rightful guardian." Ra said arrogantly while leaning himself against the doorframe of my room.
"I don't remember you doing jack shit for us." I muttered darkly while standing up from my bed to guard the girls, who were all seated on my bed.
"Who's DNA do you think your father used to splice you?" Ra's face distorted into a large grin, showing off his teeth more as a warning than anything else. I shrunk back at his response. I could see the girls become antsy in my peripheral vision. So Ra had known my father? I felt my stomach drop when I heard this information. So that meant the two had worked together?
"You worked with my father? Why?" I had assumed that had been the case from the start, but now it had been confirmed. Earlier, Ra had attempted to hide it, but now he was flaunting it. So what changed?
"I assume it will all come out in due time. Until then I will let you think on it." Ra shrugged nonchalantly before removing himself from my doorframe and walking away, leaving me in tense silence. I went to chase after him, but Georgia's voice stopped me.
"Is what he said true? It was your father that did...this to us?" Hurt flashed in Georgia's eyes. I couldn't find the energy to avoid the topic any longer.
"Yes. I wasn't sure how to tell you all." I said, feeling guilty. I clasped my hands in front of me and toyed with them.
"How long have you known?" Georgia grit out from clenched teeth as she stands to confront me.
"I've known all along—!" I felt the blow more so in my heart than my face as she struck me. I didn't react according to how she saw fit, so she hit me again. I allowed it. I deserved it. This only seemed to piss Georgia off more, so she strode past me, leaving the room entirely. Angela, Susan, and Emily wouldn't meet my eye. I knew they felt the same way. They also got up from my bed and walked out of the room without saying a word, leaving me there alone.
I could feel my old injuries start to pulsate with pain. I hadn't fully healed from the surgeries performed to save what was left of my hearing and sight. I assumed that Georgia knew this and knew where to hit to make it hurt. The physical pain was nothing compared to the emotional turmoil that Ra had purposefully stirred. I clenched my fists in anger as I strode out of the room in search of Ra, who was most likely hell-bent on starting trouble.
