"did you get along well with the lee's son?" hyunjin heard his mother ask as they began the drive home.
hyunjin nodded his head as he spoke. "yes, he was nice. he offered to teach me how to play a game." he said, a small smile appearing in his face.
"well, that's good." mrs. hwang said, and the conversation was over. when they got home, hyunjin greeted the maids and staff around his house before he went to bed.
as he laid in his dark room, he stared straight up and the blank wall. all he noticed was the chandelier in the centre of the room, sparkling with light from the moon outside.
unlike the glowing stars he noticed on the felix's ceiling, his was plain and boring. he hated it.
he just wished he could've been a normal teenager. now that he thought of it, there was only one time where he felt normal.
——
"let's get ice cream!" hyunjin smiled brightly, pointing at the ice cream stand.
"no, hyunjin." the boys mother said sternly, making the boy cry out "please! i can pay for it myself—"
"enough, hyunjin! we are not getting ice cream."
hyunjin pouted at his mothers words, instantly becoming quiet. he stared out the car window, watching as other parents and kids bought ice cream.
hyunjin grimaced at the memory, rolling over in his bed and closing his eyes, trying to fall asleep.
"sung, sung! let's go get ice cream!" hyunjin said, jumping in his spot and pointing at the familiar ice cream stand.
jisung laughed softly at the elder, "okay, okay." he said, grabbing the boys hand and walking over to the small ice cream stand.
after the boys got their ice cream, they sat at a bench nearby, eating the cold beverages.
jisung laughed at hyunjin, who had managed to get ice cream on his nose.
he stared lovingly at the elder, who looked so bright at hapoy at the moment.
all because of ice cream. it was strange, he thought. how can one be so excited and happy over an ice cream cone?
but then he thought about it deeper. he knew that the elders parents were quite strict, and that he was almost never allowed sweets.
jisung frowned at the thought, realizing the reason behind the ravenettes excitement, before hyunjin's voice snapped him back to reality.
"sung? are you okay?" hyunjin asked, staring at the boy with worry in his eyes.
"yeah, i'm fine, hyung. let's go for a walk." jisung said, standing up.
"actually, my mom said i have to be home before five." jisung frowned once again at his words, before reluctantly nodding his head.
"i'll see you tomorrow at school, okay?" jisung wanted to hug him goodbye, but he just awkwardly patted his shoulder knowing that the elder was scared of public affection.
especially because of who his parents were.
hyunjin subconsciously smiled at the memory, rolling onto his back to look up at the ceiling again.
he remember how that ice cream was the best he'd ever had, which was not much but he started craving it again after a while.
he sat up and checked the time on his phone, seeing it was just past ten at night.
fuck it.
——
so there he was, walking through the nearly empty town and trying to remember the way to the ice cream stand.
when hyunjin finally made it, he saw an old man inside the stand, giving a ice cream cone to a couple.
he walked over, the old man immediately asking him what he'd like.
"c—can i get a bubblegum ice cream cone, please?" hyunjin asked, wincing at how his voice shook.
"of course! that'll be two dollars, young man." hyunjin gave the old man the money, and got his ice cream before sitting down on the same bench he had sat at with jisung years ago.
as he ate the ice cream in pure silence, he looked up at the sky which slowly started to be painted with stars.
he smiled softly, turning around when he heard someone calling his name.
jisung was standing behind him, cigarette in one hand, and an ice cream cone in the other.
"j—jisung?" hyunjin asked, almost dropping his own ice cream cone.
"what're you doing here?" jisung asked, walking over to the elder. "won't your parents be mad that you're out late at night?"
hyunjin almost wanted to scoff and roll his eyes at him, but he held back and cleared his voice instead. "why does it matter to you?" he asked quietly, breaking eye contact with the boy.
"i don't. i just know you're gonna get your ass kicked by your mom."
this time hyunjin actually did scoff.
"maybe, but i was craving ice cream." he shrugged, continuing to eat his bubblegum ice cream.
jisung sat down beside him, and they both continued to eat their ice cream in silence.
it was an awkward silence, but it wasn't a comforting one either. it was just simply silence.
"so when did you start smoking?" hyunjin asked quietly after a few minutes.
jisung sighed, "not too long before you left." he replied just as quietly. hyunjin hummed at his words, "do your parents know?"
jisung nodded his head, before hyunjin spoke again. "i'm sorry about your mom." he whispered.
"it's fine." the boy said, taking another drag out of his cigarette when hyunjin stood up as he finally finished his ice cream.
"i have to go home now." he said, about to walk away with no goodbye when he stopped himself.
"j—jisung?" he asked, his voice shaking as he spoke. the younger hummed, staring at him curiously as he stayed quiet for a few seconds.
"well?"
"..i'm sorry. for everything." hyunjin said after a few more moments, quickly walking away leaving jisung stunned by his words.
in all honest, it hurt. within a few seconds, all the memories from years ago just came rushing back in an instant. and that's when the first tear fell.
and they couldn't stop.
