Chapter 45
Mauled

The rain continued to pour down hard, as Andrea formed a ring of salt around the bowl of water and herbs.

"What is this" Hayley asked, over the pounding rain.

"It's a simple herbal combination" Aiden explained. "Once, us witches and werewolves were allies and my Wife- your Aunt, taught me how to do this. It tells you when a witch's curse is in the air" he explained.

"And it works" Andrea interjected, as she lit the snapdragon and pine weed. It burned a dark, pure black. They both sighed at the sight. "This was Dahlia" she declared. "I can't override this, weather manipulation takes sacrificial magic."

"So we just have to wait?" Hayley asked.

"We don't have much of a choice" she sighed. "And we can't take them into this," she said, glancing around at the pack, working through the rain. She coughed as all the wolves turned to her, forming a crescent.

"Thank you for your loyalty, to me, to Hope but I can't let you walk to your deaths for me" she called out, to the crowd. "I'm leaving with Hope, and Hayley's coming with me. We're going to carry on, and we'll be okay" she promised them.

She swallowed hard, refusing to look at her father as she confessed. "I can't be your Queen anymore" she declared. "Not like this."

Her stomach fell, as the pack dropped down to their knees. "You will always be their Queen" Aiden asserted.

"If we do this" she swallowed down her fear. "You have to be prepared for the risks."

"We know what we sighed up for" one of them answered. "And we're not going anywhere."

The pack refused to go. As Hayley, Andrea and Aiden walked through the river, they weren't far behind.

"I hate this" Adrea muttered, as they wadded through the water. "I hate running all the time."

"Where are we going?" Hayley asked. "Where do we go from here?"

"About that" Andrea muttered.

"I'm dying" Aiden interjected.

"What?" Hayley asked in surprise.

"I was given a few months to make peace, with my family, and by my calculations, I have just under twenty-seven hours until I die again," he told them.

"We'll be in California by them" Andrea replied, as they reached the ground again. "There will be thousands of witches who can help you go in peace," she told him. "I'll make sure of it."

"Are we -"

"We're going to the backstreets" Andrea clarified, to Hayley. "I built that town, my friends still live there- my family live there. There is no one better to protect her" she vowed.

"I thought there we no vampires allowed?" Hayley asked.

She had a valuable point. "It's my town, Hayley. If I say Hybrids are allowed, then they're allowed" she shrugged off.

Hayley nodded as they reached the roadside, a car rolling up.

"Look what I found" the wolf in the front of the car, declared.

"Come on then, let's go" Andrea ordered.

The pack finally reached an abandoned warehouse site, deciding to settle for the night, before Hayley, Aiden, Hope and Andrea made it to California. If they estimated it right, Aiden would only make it six hours before he passed.
