"Your bags are in the car and ready to go." Derek came back into the kitchen where his mom was seated at the table, flipping through a magazine. Her visit had been a completely surprise and gave Derek a lot to think about. But he was happy to have her here and have somebody else to talk to.
"Thank you Dear but I hardly needed someone to carry my bags for me." His mother replied, before closing the magazine she had purchased before coming out to his place. "What do you think I did before I got here?"
"I don't know...I was just being a good son." He chuckled, kissing his mother on the cheek before sitting down.
"Well thank you."
"Hmm...You're welcome."
"So Meredith is getting dressed for work?" She inquired. As much as she wanted to stick by morals, Carolyn Shepherd had never seen her son this happy. Meredith seemed so fitting, so beautiful for him.
"Yeah...we're both going in after we drop you off." He nodded.
"I remember thinking she was a very smart woman the first time I met her." The older woman at the table sipped at the glass of water. "She has so many beautiful qualities...saving lives is one of them."
"She's so composed in surgery...I never have to worry when she's in the OR with me."
"You two must perform beautifully together."
"She's an amazing surgeon." Derek breathed.
"You know....you used to come home for holidays with your wife and complain that she didn't know what it was like. It was hard and you were tired..."
"Now I have someone who understands."
"Hmm..."
"I think Dad would have loved her." He whispered.
"Dad would have asked you what the hell you were thinking keeping your friend's wife in your house until he saw the way you looked at her."
"Like he looked at you."
"Remember the day you came home and told me you wanted to be a surgeon?" Mrs. Shepherd questioned as she stood up. "You came in and I was making soup for the Towners down the street."
"Very clearly." Derek laughed.
"I told you that you would never be able to coexist in a healthy relationship."
"And look what happened...you were right."
"I also told you that you would end up in mounds of debt."
"That was true." He laughed as his mother handed him a cup of coffee.
"Well clearly your financial standings are much better now so my prediction was no longer relevant."
"Do you think I could have a healthy relationship with Meredith?" Derek asked his mom as she took a seat across from him agin.
"Derek I don't understand what you're doing. The logic of kissing her...I don't get. I know it's romantic and when her divorce is legal, I will think this is all very wonderful." The older woman explained, before shaking her head and looking up at her son. "That being said, I see the way you look at each other. She's not leaving this home."
"Thanks." Derek chuckled, looking up at his mother with a smile.
"She might not actually get it yet, but she and I spoke last night about all of the decorating tips she gave you." Carolyn laughed.
