Throughout the entirety of our walk to the Dropship, Bellamy's eyes never once left my body. The whole time I could feel his eyes drilling into me, seeming to reach past my exterior. With the exception of me looking back at him just to make sure that he was okay, my eyes stayed forward, listening as Kane devised a plan. If it was a trap and Pike wasn't willing to trade Bellamy for Monty, Kane would go with them while Octavia and I were to ensure our faction got to a new safe location. Of course, Octavia argued the plan, stating that she was adamant it was a trap and that she wouldn't let Pike leave alive.
I stayed quiet, but I was willing to argue that we shouldn't trade Bellamy like we used to trade for rations. He was a person, not an object, even if he was still on Pike's side — which I wasn't sure was true anymore. The remaining silence in my head was filled with prayers that Monty would be alone.
As we slowly approached the entrance to what used to be our camp, my eyes darted all around the burnt ground, looking for any signs of a trap. On my left, Kane held one hand on Bellamy's shoulder while the other held a rifle that was aimed just past Bellamy. Octavia had her sword out, on high alert, expecting someone to come out. I held my handgun with a tight grip, pointing it forward in case of any threats.
"Monty?" Kane called out. We waited a moment, hearing nothing but silence coming from around us. "We got here first."
"No, we didn't." Octavia proclaimed before positioning her sword on Bellamy's shoulder and forcing him forward, holding him in her grasp.
"What are you doing?" Kane whispered.
"Get outside!" Octavia yelled, my eyes darting to Kane as he did the same to me.
Kane and I took a few hesitant steps forward just as the sheets that covered the Dropship entrance moved, and out came Monty. My eyes narrowed when seeing a hand holding a handgun pop out behind him with the aim right on his head. Pike then walked out, gripping Monty as he continued to aim the gun at his head.
"They followed me. I'm sorry." Monty apologized, proving my assumption from before that Monty would never willingly put us in a trap.
"Let him go, Pike." Kane ordered, looking through the scope of his rifle.
"Can't do that." Pike replied before holding a radio that I did not know was in his free hand to his mouth and uttering, "One at their feet." Shortly after, a gunshot rang out, a bullet landing right in front of my foot. We all flinched at the action; my eyes began scouring the sky in hopes of seeing anywhere the sniper might be. "It's over. Put down your weapons."
Octavia looked back at Kane quickly, hissing, "Shoot him."
"Monty's in the shot." Said Kane.
That's when I realized that Pike was blatantly hiding behind Monty so that we couldn't shoot him. "He's in mine, too." I said, trying any possible way to give me a clear shot, but no matter what, Monty was in the path of a potential bullet. He went from being a potential trading pawn to a human shield.
"Come on, Marcus." Pike beckoned before another gunshot rang out at our feet. "I promised Monty's Mother that I'd bring him home alive. Don't make me a liar."
My head tilted to the side. "Then maybe you should stop holding a gun to his head."
Movement to my left caused me to turn my head to see that Kane was disarming, taking the rifle off his body and disregarding it. "Kane, no." Octavia said, disgruntled.
Kane looked over and nodded for me to do the same thing, but for a moment, I didn't, I thought. I thought that we were trapped — we got caught in the trap that we knew was coming, and there was no getting out of it. Pike held a gun to Monty's head and had one probably aimed at mine. If we stood down, Monty would live, but there would be a high chance that Kane, Octavia, and I would be killed. Though I knew if we didn't stand down, we were all going to be killed right now, and that's why I lowered my weapon and tossed it in the direction of Pike.
