Eric was on lunch break, when his phone rang.
'Hello?'
'I need your help, Beale. Can you get over to Dovecote immediately?' Granger asked.
'Um, yeah. What's the problem?' Eric asked.
'Just get over here! I'll explain when you get here!'
'Okay then.'
At Dovecote
'Okay sir, what do you need my help for... Oh.' Eric looked down and saw a small pile of broken glass.
'Is that one of...'
'Hetty's teacups? Yeah.' Granger said.
'Oh that's not good.'
'Ya think? I was dusting, and I guess I accidentally bumped into it, and before I could do anything, it broke!'
'And you called me here because?'
'I need you to help me glue it back together. It's a small pile, so it should be easy.' Granger said.
'Sir? Are you sure you want to do this? Wouldn't it be best to just tell her it was an accident? I'm sure she'd understand.' Eric suggested.
'I thought about it, but then I remembered this bizarre story of what happened to the last person who broke one of her teacups. That person, quite literally disappeared off the face of the earth!'
'Oh my!'
'Which is why I need help taking a crack at gluing this back together. Can you do it?'
'Of course!'
They worked hard all day.
That night, Hetty was drinking out of that cup. Granger thought he was in the clear, until Hetty said:
'The next time you try to glue a teacup back together, you might want to work on the are in the middle of the handle better.'
'That's it, I'm a dead man!' Granger thought. 'How, did you..'
'I notice things. And since I know 1st hand that you're not that great at glue or glass, I assume you had some help with this?'
'I'm not saying who it was! You can't make me!'
'I don't care who helped, I just want to know how you broke it!' Hetty responded.
Granger told her what happened.
'So, it was an accident?' She asked.
'100%' He answered.
'Okay.'
'You're not going to do anything bad? I AM your husband.'
'No! I'm a little annoyed that you tried to hide the truth from me, but, I'm also flattered that you tried to put it back together. That's quite nice.' Hetty responded.
'You're welcome!'
'Just try to be more careful around my tea stuff, okay?'
