Raven remains silent as we drive. She doesn't say anything at all. I am aware that she is contemplating, and I do not doubt that she is spinning some ludicrous ideas in her mind. I approach the manor's gates in my car, enter the code, and proceed inside.
I stop the car and turn to face her. She is calm, but I can hear her heartbeat, and she appears to be worn out from the struggle. I go outside and unlock her door. We enter and make our way to the dining hall holding hands as we walk. We watch as everyone shouts over one another. I turn to face Raven, whose marks are radiant. She is beginning to lose emotional control because this is too much.
"Calm down. Just breathe." I whisper in her ear as I stand behind her, rubbing her arms. She takes a deep breath and walks away, heading to the backyard. I follow, pacing myself slowly behind her as she makes her way through the trees. She stops out of sight of any eyes looking out from the manor. I follow her and see her sitting under one of the trees. I take my jacket off, place it on the ground, and take a seat next to her. "Come here," I say, pulling her onto my lap.
She lays her head on my chest as her breathing slows and she becomes calmer. "I can't be in there if everyone is going to argue. You know exactly what will happen if that shouting continues." She says quietly.
"Lights flickering, glass shattering, or earthquakes." I smile at her, trying to make her laugh but instead she just looks sad.
"I feel like there is a war inside my head, honestly, sometimes I wish I was dead because none of this would happen. I'm driving myself crazy, I'm broken. I'm tired of trying to be normal." A tear runs down her cheek.
"You're not broken, and you're not normal." I wipe the tear from her face and say, "You're amazing and unique. You're different, embrace that."
She sighs as she closes her eyes and leans on my chest, "The darkness that I have always dreamt about is true. I'm standing right in the middle of this dark storm. I can still feel the reach of the monsters trying to take me away as I hid in the corner of my room. Clay, I'm reliving the night my parents died. I keep going over it in my head, this will never end unless I stop them."
"Babe, look at me," I say as I cup her face. Her eyes glassed with tears as she looks at me. "You have never told me about that night, do you remember anything else?"
"The darkness was all around, I remember a big storm had hit our town. I hid in my room as the commotion outside became too much. Smoke filled my home. I remember someone or something trying to get to me. I called it the darkness because I couldn't see who or what was around as I heard footsteps come towards me. I remember my dad yelling, "Stay away from her," and then the sound of pain. The darkness spoke, and in response said "It is her destiny." She looks at me as the last words come out, and her eyes widen.
"What is it?" I ask her as if something in that story triggered something.
"Lovell, Lovell was the darkness I was afraid of." This has been following her, her entire life. And now she faces the thing that frightened her the most as a child.
I put my head down, her face gives it away. She will see everything that has happened as something she has to fix. She feels like she needs to protect the whole town.
These Lycans and vampires are at war with one another over a creation that they all contributed to. The Vamps feel she must defend them by all means, regardless of the cost to herself, while the Lycans believe she should rule alongside them. Any evil that seeks to split us apart will always be repelled by Raven. She shouldn't have to, though. She did not ask for this. I raise my head and touch her cheek with my hand.
"You won't have to fight on your own, I'm fighting with you, and I will always fight with you. Your priority may be to protect this hell we call home, but my priority is to protect you. Always." She leans in and kisses me. My tongue parts our mouths as she moves herself to straddle me. My hands on her lower back, she kisses me harder,
