"Jen, hey can you hear me?" I asked. My voice sounded as if I had barely any air in my lungs.
"Jen, come on." I said again, and like before, there was no response. I slightly moved my head onto its side, so I can look up. It looked that there was 1 foot between my head and the snow.
"I can't move, if I do, I can cause the snow to completely fall on me. And I'll suffocate." I said to myself. I sighed, and closed my eyes.
As I laid there I heard voices.
"I guess I've finally lost it." I say, making myself even more hopeless. I closed my eyes again, and desired to fall asleep, knowing I won't be found.
Suddenly something began poking the side of my forehead. I open my eyes and see a long pole stuck against my head. Then the pole is pulled out from the snow, and I can see light come in the hole.
"I hit something, you think it could be either Lilly or Jen?" Someone asked.
"Yes! I'm down here! I can't move, and I have little space for my head." I said, attempting to yell.
"Wait, did you hear that? If someone's down there, say something!" Commanded the person above the snow.
"Something!" I said, joking around.
"Thanks smart ass! That's not what I meant!" Said the person above, sounding annoyed.
"No problem! Can you get me and Jen out? She should be right next to me." I said looking over to her hand. My eyes widened, the hole where Jen's hand was sticking through the snow, was seeping with blood.
"Oh my god." I whispered, not believing my eyes.
"Yeah, but we'er digging you out first since we know where you are exactly." Said the person.
"Fine, but another person start digging her up to." I said. The person didn't respond, but they started to make the little hole at the top, larger. I relaxed my head and closed my eyes again. This will take a while, I just need to stay awake throughout the time.
About 20 minuets have passed, and the people above finally were able to get the hole large enough to pull me out. They lay me down on the snow, and I turn my head looking down the in the hole they pulled me out of.
"You all right?" Asked one of the people who pulled me out. I looked over to the person who asked me, and found out it was Shaun.
"What are you doing here?" I asked.
"I was the first pick to investigate this." Shaun replied.
"Dig out Jen!" I commanded. He nodded his head, and began to dig.
Please be alive! The other cadets that came with Shaun jumped into the hole and began to dig around Jen's arm that was sticking out. Shaun began to dig right above from where Jen's body should be.
"This was an avalanche, it's when the snow from the top of the mountain comes down, carrying more snow. You are really luck you survived. Hopefully your friend did too." Said the cadet in the hole.
About five minuets later, Shaun was able to reach Jen.
"I see her! I think I can pull her out now!" Said Shaun, sounding very happy. I smiled, and couldn't wait to talk to Jen, and explain what happened!
"Good! Pull her up, and I'll make sure everything goes smoothly." Said the cadet in the hole I was dug out of.
"Alright." Replied Shaun. I watched as Shaun began to come out of hole, with Jen on his back.
"Oh my..." gasped the cadet in the first hole. He climbed out of the hole carrying something. I turned my head and saw that he was holding Jen's arm.
My stomach sunk, and my eyes widened. That must had been the blood I saw earlier. Shaun laid Jen next to me and sat above Jen, pulling out a small rope.
"Jen." I whispered. Shaun wrapped the rope around the end of what's left of her arm, and tied it. It seemed to be very tight. Then he pulled out a small piece of metal. He stuck it between the knot, and began to twist the metal, making the rope tighter.
"What are you doing?!" I said worried. I sat up and inched my way closer to Jen.
"It's something I read in a book. When losing a limb, you would so this to cut circulation, making it so that the person won't bleed out and die." Replied Shaun. Soon enough, the blood stopped flowing out of Jen's stubbed arm. Shaun moved over and laid his head above Jen's heart.
"There's a beat, but a small one." He said very quietly. Then he moved his head over to Jen's mouth and nose.
"Alright, she's not breathing! We'er going to give her CPR." Commanded Shaun. I nodded my head.
Shaun unzipped Jen's jacket, and cuffed his hands together. Then he pressed his hands on her chest.
"1, 2, 3..." Shaun said pumping Jen's chest. He quickly tilted Jen's head and plugged her nose, then placed his lips on hers. He blew carbon dioxide into her lungs, and I watched her chest expand. As I watched I felt my eyes begin to get flooded with tears. The tears fell, now rolling down my cheeks, then falling onto my lap. What would happen if she died?
Shaun continued the routine for a few minuets longer.
"She's gone." Said Shaun, finally quitting.
"Don't, please don't stop!" I pleaded.
He sighed and continued to the routine. As he blew into Jen's mouth, I watched Jen's eyes slightly open. Then she sprung up and coughed.
"Jen! Your alright!" I said with more tears flowing out. I hugged her, and didn't want to let go.
"Lilly, your squeezing to hard." Whined Jen.
"I don't care!" I laughed. I letted go and sat in front of Jen. She looked at me and Shaun.
"What happened?" Asked Jen.
"You and were in an avalanche." I said smiling.
"I can't feel my left arm, is it broken?" Asked Jen. Me and Shaun looked at each other, then back at Jen.
"You can't feel your left arm, because you don't have your left arm anymore." Said Shaun.
Her eyes widened, and the color in face vanished. Jen turned her head to her severed arm, and stared at her stub. I saw tears begin to flow from her face, and soon she began hyperventilating. Jen fell back and laid on the snow, shaking and crying.
"She's going into shock! We need to go now." Barked Shaun. I nodded my head and got up.
The other cadet picked up Jen and began to carry Jen up the mountain.
Shaun grabbed my arm and put it around his shoulders. We began to quickly walk behind the cadet carrying Jen. Then behind us was another cadet holding Jen's arm.
"You don't have to help me." I said to Shaun.
"Lets just say this is pay back for busting up my shoulder. I know you don't like to be helped." Laughed Shaun.
"I didn't 'bust' your shoulder. So shut up! Your over exaggerating!" I snapped.
"Ah, yes! I've hit a nerve!" Said Shaun, smiling.
"Shut up! Your not helping right now! Your aggravating!" I snapped again.
"Alright, I'll stop. If you stop being cranky." Laughed Shaun.
"Fine, whatever." I said getting annoyed.
"I just want to be there for Jen. She's my goal right now." I Said looking up at Jen's shaking body.
"I see, your a loyal friend. Aren't you?" Asked Shaun.
"I don't know. I don't answer those type of questions." I replied.
We got to a metic center, and Jen was put straight into surgery. I was put into a room to rest for a day. I sat up on the bed and stared at my fathers ring in my hand. My head was tilted against an arm on the bed. My eyes were squinted as I rubbed the design on the ring.
Suddenly I heard a knock from the closed door. I looked up and saw Shaun walk in.
"Jeez! It's really dark in here. Lights off, shades closed. What's up?" Asked Shaun walking towards me.
"Why do you care? It's just how I am." I sad looking back at the ring. Shaun stopped at the top of the bed, leaned on the wall, and said "Well, I'm sorry to make you even more sad, but there's something about Jen." I put down the ring and looked at Shaun.
"What do you mean?" I asked, getting worried.
"Jen, fell into a coma."
