Everyone who lived in Hawkins, Indiana knew, one way or another, that their town was cursed. Just the year prior a local boy had gone missing for days and then magically reappeared after being confirmed dead. There was much speculation that surrounded the boy's disappearance.

Some even rumored that he came back from the dead. Others said that he ran away from home to frighten his mom.

However, every rumor that traveled around the town was far from what happened. And there were only a few people who knew the truth, the real truth.

So, when new residences arrived in Hawkins they became the talk of the so-called "cursed" town and they had no idea what troubles Hawkins would bring upon them.

Billy Hargrove sped down the street with his sister and step-sister. His rock music was blasting loudly and the windows of his car were rolled down, letting in the morning air.

Daphne, his sister, sat in the passenger seat next to him mumbling along to the song playing and mentally preparing herself for her first day at Hawkins High.

In the backseat of the muscle car sat Max Mayfield, the Hargrove's step-sister. Unlike Billy and Daphne who were bobbing their heads to the ear-piercing music, Max sat quietly and kept her eyes anywhere, but on the road or her step-siblings in front of her.

Before they knew it Billy barreled through the school's parking lot, making all the high school students around gawk at the roar from his Camaros' engine.

Once the car was parked, Billy stepped out of the driver's seat with a freshly lit cigarette in his hand and looked around with a smug look on his face.

Daphne climbed out of the car just after him and moved her seat forward to allow Max to get out. She gave her a soft smile before Max let her eyes flicker up at her step sister before she dropped her skateboard and skated off toward the middle school at the opposite end of the parking lot, without a word.

Billy looked back at Max, who was now a short distance away from them, and rolled his eyes, then turned to his sister. Billy motioned his head for her to follow and the Hargrove siblings made their way toward the high school.

Daphne and her brother stood side by side awaiting their class schedules in the front office. The secretary, after being gone for a few minutes, came back to the front desk with two pieces of paper. "And here are your locker numbers and combinations," she grinned. The plump woman spoke much too cheerfully for it being so early in the morning which made her voice seem like nails on a chalkboard.

She wrote both Billy's and Daphne's locker numbers and combinations at the top of their schedules and then slid the papers toward them.

"Now, you better get going. Don't want to be late on your first day!" The secretary smiled brightly, making her eyes squint from her raised cheekbones.
