Love at First Threat

I just enlisted with tha Mercenaries Guild. I would've joined a few hundred of years before but me Daddy is very protective of me. So, it was me first day at HQ an it was a bit of a culture shock bein there. I mean I never really left tha Asgard area me whole life an now I was surrounded by all sorts of crazy creatures. Lots of things raced through my beautiful head. Like I remember staring at a Minotaur when I first saw one there an wonderin if they tasted like beef or human. While I was on me way ta tha dinin hall I remember I was introduced ta Morothoth, but that was very brief an this isn't where he came part of tha group. Finally, we get to tha dinin hall an I get sat down. Waitin for me mentor, I hear murmurs about some random mercenary getting Voided the previous week an about the fall of some city. I also hear some mentioning how sexy I am an I start wondrin if I need ta devil tase someone me first day. Tryin ta ignore that comments, I start lookin at tha menu an find they don't have much ta cater ta my discerning pallet. Finally, I order some pomegranate sorbet an find it's quite yummy. I start thinkin an I remember they gave me a handbook, but I can't remember where I put it. Then I hope me mentor doesn't get pissed at me for it.

After a while, a large creature with big 'ole tusks an yellow eyes sits at my table. He cracks a grin, which I thought looked kinda silly behind tha tusks, an introduces himself. "Thrack, rank sixty-four. Your mentor is my current task. It has come to my ears that your father is the Mighty Odin." He glances at me girls. "The translation of your tattoo over your heart seems to confirm it."

"Aye." I state with tha confidence of a demon princess. I take tha final bite of me sorbet. "Me name's Kadlin, Daughter of Odin an rank forty-six. Not a bad start for my first day."

Thrack raises an eyebrow. "Confidence like that will take you far. Or possibly to a premature end. One succubus previously graced out guild and she met her end in a most horrific way. I do hope you do not follow her path."

I give me new buddy a cocky smirk. "She wasn't trained ta fight by Thor."

Thrack lets out a laugh that fills tha room. "Your argument is compelling." He reaches up an touches his tusk ring. "I am curious. Did you read your handbook?"

Me face flushes a little bit. "Na honey." I worry for a bit that I might be in trouble on me first day. "I can't remember where I left it."

Thrack laughs again. "Not a soul reads that book. I was merely curious if you were the first." He stands an motions ta me. "Come. I will show you around." Tha next hour or so I spend followin Thrack around. He shows me how ta sign up for jobs, where ta get food, where tha private rooms are an who not ta piss off. We talk about tha best jobs and tha worst jobs an stuff like that. Thrack is very helpful though he's got a nasty habit of pointing ta stuff when I'm behind him forgettin he's nine feet tall an as wide as a grakle.

After a while we end up back tha dinin hall. We find a table in tha corner, order some drinks an he shows me how ta make food requests while we wait. We get our drinks when he leans in. He keeps his voice low an that intrigues me. "There is a job that needs undertaking. The challenge is high for someone as new as you, but my regular partner is currently unavailable. The contractor requests the acquisition of a single item from a disgraced magi who resides near Carcaol. Your cut is eight thousand. What say you?"

"What happened to ya partner?" I ask while I consider tha temptin offer.

Thrack sips on his tea. "As none of us were there, we cannot be for sure. However, all signs point to him being sent to the Void." He smirks like he knows somethin. "I shall see him again one day."

I get me adorable curious look on me face. "Ya said the Void right? An ya know what that means honey?"

"Yes and yes." he says condescendingly. He takes another sip of his tea. "He will return. Not even nothing can stop that human."
