09 - homecoming

*fall of freshman year*

I bike quickly to the store and pick up a few big bags of Reese's Pieces and a bundle of daisies, Will's favorite flowers, and stuff it all into my backpack, doing my best not to smush the flowers.

When I get home, I grab a big white poster from the pack of them that I bought for my last project and a pack of colorful sharpies and set down on my floor. I spend the next hour and half writing 'Will you be my date to homecoming?'  in big colorful bubble letters and decorating the poster with hearts and drawings of balloons.

When it's finally done, I admire my work closely to make sure it looks perfect, and run to Nancy's room.

"Hey Nance? Can you maybe drive me to Will's house?" I ask, her head turning from her homework to me.

"Sure. Why?" she asks.

"Well I'm sort of going to ask him to homecoming." I say, feeling my face turn red.

"Oh my gosh! That's so sweet! Of course I'll drive you." she says, pushing her homework to the side and jumping out of bed. I grab the candy, flowers, and poster and load it into the car, my hands shaking from nerves the entire way there.

What if he doesn't like it?

What if he says no?

Am I doing too much?

Am I going to scare him off?

I shake all the negative thoughts out of my head as we pull up to his house.

"You got this! Just call me when you need picked up." Nance says, hugging me quickly before I get out of the car. I watch her pull away before walking up the stairs of his front porch. I know he'll be the one to answer the door since his mom and Jonathan are at work.

I slowly lift up my hand and knock, quickly holding up the poster in one hand and the candy and flowers balanced in the other hand. I hear footsteps and the door swings open to reveal Will who is still in his pajamas.

His eyes skim over the words and a huge smile appears on his blushing face.

"Mike, of course I'll go with you!" he says, kissing me softly on the cheek. He invited me in and I hand him the flowers and chocolates, his eyes becoming glossy with tears.

"Will, what's wrong?!" I ask in panic.

"It's just that - nobody has ever done something so nice for me. Thank you, Mike." he says, setting the chocolates on the table and rummaging around to find a vase which he fills with water and then places the flowers in.

"How did you know that I loved daisies?" he asks, walking slowly towards me.

"I may have asked Jonathan." I say, blushing with embarrassment.

"That's so sweet. I love you, Mike." he says, leaning in and kissing me softly. I begin to kiss down his neck as he leans his head back and sighs.

"I love you too." I say into his neck.

I straighten out my suit and brush my hair back, sliding on my shoes and hearing a knock on the door. I run downstairs and swing it open to see Will dressed in a super nice brown suit that looks incredible on him.

"Will, you look - you look amazing." I stutter, looking him up and down.

"Thank you, Mike. So do you." he says as I kiss him on the cheek and brush his hair out of his face.

When we get to the dance, we say hi to everyone before walking into the dance floor nervously. We stand next to Max and Lucas who are hugging and swaying back and forth, Max blushing when she sees us. She gives us a little wave as Will and I face each other.

"Dance with me?" I say nervously.

He puts his arms over my shoulders as I cautiously hold his waist in my hands, pulling him closer to me. 'Head Over Heels' by Tears for Fears starts to play as we sway back and forth.

I can feel peoples eyes on us, but I simply ignore them and keep my eyes locked with Will's.

"You look so beautiful right now." I say, not being able to find any other word to describe him right now. The way his eyes are sparkling and his cheeks are perfectly rosy drives me insane.

"You always know what to say." he says, leaning in and kissing me passionately. I kiss back and pull him closer to me as he buries his head in my neck.
