"Going twice..."
Cody was going to lose the jersey, the only jersey he ever wanted.
Mady stood on stage, not ready to give her late husband's jersey away to someone who wasn't Cody.
It was like the whole world went slow motion, as Kacie could only hear her slow breaths and feel the hand of support on her back from Christian seated next to her.
"$20000." Abruptly, Kacie spat out at the last second as her eyes shot up. She slowly looked to her right at a jaw-dropped Cody, who was ghost white.
Kacie returned to him a nod of pride, as a grateful smile covered his face.
"Going once..."
Silence.
"Going twice..."
"Kacie, are you sure?" Christian slightly shook her, not sure what to think about the huge number she just put out.
"Sold!" Chris yelled, as everyone cheered and Kacie rose to her feet to claim the jersey.
"Positive," she replied, unlocking hands with Christian as he stayed in his seat and she went towards the front of the room, earning an unpleasant look from the man behind her that was bidding against Cody.
Kacie's heels clicked up the three tile steps as she shook Chris's hand then was embraced by Mady who squeezed her tightly and whispered 'thank you' into her ear.
But truly, Kacie didn't know what just happened. She just threw away basically all of her savings for a jersey... that wasn't even for her.

After sorting out all the expenses, the jersey was officially hers.
She'd gotten a couple of pats on the back from many Dodgers players, who were proud of her for not letting the jersey slide.
Christian was still a little confused. He didnt get why she wanted the jersey for that much.
Even though he'd offered to help pay for it, Kacie refused and paid for it fully.
As the rest of the banquet went on, Christian ended up separating from Kacie and decided to catch up with and old friend who'd happened to be there, leaving Kacie at a table on her own.
As she sat there, replying to texts from her sister, asking if they were still meeting up tomorrow, the man from behind her approached her.
He was tall and very slender, almost creepy looking. His hair was slicked back and he looked like a vampire straight out of a Tim Burton movie.
His black eyes locked with hers, as he sat down and kept his eyes on her.
"Is there something you need, sir?" Kacie asked, weirded out.
"No, dear, I just wanted to tell you that your bidding skills were very... unpredictable, but admirable." he started.
"Thanks?" Kacie raised an eyebrow.
"But I'd like to offer you something," he continued, Kacie still wearily keeping her eyes on him, "I'll give you $100,000 for that jersey."
"No." Kacie coldly stated.
There was no argument. She was not reselling this jersey.
