The auction had gone really smoothly, and as the end of it approached Chris had already racked up wads of cash for charity.
Christian didn't get the Kershaw jersey, but he did end up with a signed Mookie Betts batting helmet, lord knows why he needed— but it was cool.
The last thing up for auction was Corey's jersey.
Mady went up and gave a speech before auctioning the jersey. Kacie could tell she was holding back tears as she stood up there and looked past her into space, before stepping aside from the podium to make room for Chris, who began the auction.
The first bid was $500, from a wealthy-looking man behind her that had kept quiet the whole bid.
From a few tables down, Kacie heard Cody respond with, "$700."
The bid was intense, mainly just consisting of the man behind them and Cody, either of them were letting up and they were already at $5000.
Cody knew he couldn't let this jersey slip through his fingers. It didn't feel right letting anyone else take off with that jersey besides himself, no matter how many he had. Corey was his best friend and any bit of him that he can preserve today was coming with him.

$8800
$9000
As the other man began to throw around bigger amounts of money, Kacie realized Cody's were starting to go down.
And eventually, she caught a glimpse of him as they hit $10000.
He looked defeated.
$10600
$12000
$12700
$15000
Cody bit his lip. He couldn't risk that much money right now. But he couldn't let go of Corey.
His thoughts raced.
'Think quick Cody... think quick.'
"$15000 going once for late baseball star Corey Seager's signed jersey..." Chris croaked loudly, his voice trailing. He looked displeased and sad.
Kacie looked over at Mady, who looked worryingly from the jersey, to Cody, and back to the other man who was so aggressive about buying it.
Swallowing, she saw Cody slouch, his hands over his face. He was done bidding.
"Going twice..."
