Late August 2026...
Me: I thought you wanted to talk?
I button up my jeans in the back of the car and hop back into the driver's seat, Scarlett doing the same, jumping back into the front seat, pulling the sun visor down to check her makeup.
Scarlett: Who told you that?
Me: You told Rose on the phone you needed to go because we needed to talk?
Scarlett: Oh, no. You just looked hot and sweaty fixing the tennis court, you were turning me on.
Me: I got that. We literally just had sex in the car on the driveway, couldn't you have waited to get in the house at least?
Scarlett: You weren't concerned a minute ago, honey.I turn to look at her, smirking away in the mirror.
Me: You just fix up that messy lipstick of yours and shush, honey.
She closes the sun visor and opens the car door as I slap her ass when she gets out, getting out myself and following her to the kitchen.
I grab a bottle of water from the fridge and sit on the bar stool opposite Scarlett.
Scarlett: What's the next job on the list?
Me: Well, I was rudely sabotaged while fixing the court so I need to finish that, then the next thing is putting up then new front gate, after that we just need to plant the olive trees around the perimeter.
Scarlett: You weren't rudely sabotaged, you loved it.
Me: Well yeah, but having sex in the car, on our own driveway is a little crazy, no?
Scarlett: Oh live life on the edge, it was fun. D'you need any help with the trees?
Me: Nah. Me, Flo, Hailee and Evans got it. You could unpack the new stuff for the kitchen and get rid of the old plates though if you want.
Scarlett: On it.She starts taking out all the old plates and cutlery to throw away.
Me: She got 4 consecutive life sentences.
Scarlett: Hmm?
Me: That girl, she got life without parole, 4 life sentences, one after the other. They sentenced her this morning.
Scarlett: That was quick.
Me: Priority because of the destruction caused. The UK agreed to have her tried here, so it was quicker because she was already here, and the prosecution service back in the UK were apparently told to put a rocket up their ass with the admin work. So that's it, done.
Scarlett: How do you feel?
Me: I guess I thought I'd be relieved that this was over, but actually I just feel kind of like I have to work out how to do life again with no drama.
Scarlett: I'm sure I could find some drama.
Me: Oh no, I'm looking forward to being pretty carefree for a while.I look down at the counter, placing my drink back on the worktop. Scarlett comes round and sits next to me.
Scarlett: What?
Me: What?
Scarlett: Something's bothering you, what?
Me: She rigged my audition for the ABC contract I got, all that time ago. I probably wouldn't have been given a second look usually, but she worked it so that I got given the role. Which is weird because she said I it was supposed to be her life but then totally contradicted herself by doing that.
Scarlett: She's sick.
Me: Yeah but if she didn't do that, I'd probably just be your PA still.
Scarlett: You'd still be my wife though.
Me: You don't know that.
Scarlett: Of course I know that. I fell in love with you before the fame, before the movies and the Oscars, before the money, the kids, before it all. So what if she did rig that? Everything else you've done is because of you, and how talented you are. Not because of her.
Me: I just feel like it's tainted a little, like my career has been splashed with dirty money. She takes my hand and raises it up to her face, kissing my palm.
Scarlett: Babe, you are so, so talented, it's actually abnormal how talented you are at literally anything. And yeah, you've had it pretty tough the whole time, but that's done now. You have every right to be insecure about stuff, but your career, what you've achieved in so little time? You have nothing to be unsure about with that.
Me: I know, it's just a pain in the ass when I know that but my brain doesn't, you know?
Scarlett: You see those?
