Winter 2018...
I've just finished a radio interview and jump in the car to get home. I get a phone call, it's Scarlett.
Scarlett: "Hi babe, could you call to pick up Rose on your way home? I just finished filming and honestly I'm so tired."
Me: "Yeah no problem, do you need anything else?"
Scarlett: "Wine? No, no. I'm absolutely fine. Wanna get takeout and watch a movie?"
Me: "Sounds like a plan. Okay, send me your order and I'll grab dinner. I'll see you when I get in."
Scarlett: "Okay babe, drive safe. See ya."I get to her school, park up and head over to the reception doors, the paparazzi still following me from the studio, they're relentless, but it's part of being famous so I'm told.
Receptionist: Hi Ms Y/L/N, so nice to see you. I'll just go and grab Rose for you.
Me: Thank you so much. The receptionist comes back with Rose, followed by her teacher.
Rose: Hi Y/N.
Me: Hi sweetie, have you had a good day?I start zipping up her coat as she puts her gloves on.
Rose: Ya! We did drawing today.
Me: That's great honey, you'll have to show me and momma when we get home. We just have to make a stop on the way okay? Otherwise we're gonna have one hungry momma.
Rose: Okay.I lift her up to carry her back to the car.
Teacher: Ms Y/L/N, hi, I'm Alice Carter, Rose's teacher this year. I just wanted to let you know that you have a wonderful, wonderful daughter. She's a pleasure to teach, she really is.
Me: Oh, thank you so much, that really means a lot. I'll be sure to pass the message onto Scarlett for you.
Teacher: You aren't her mother?
Me: I'm her step parent, my partner is her mother. Her Dad isn't around so it's just us.
Teacher: Well we need a legal parent to come and pick the children up here, we won't be able to let you take her, we don't know who you are.Given I've had the longest day in the world, this woman might just regret this. But stay calm Y/N, you don't want Rose to get a sense of your anger.
Me: I'm sorry, I don't really understand. I've been in Rose's life now both on a professional level and now a personal level for two years.
Receptionist: Only biological parents or legally adoptive parents can remove our children from preschool here, it's our policy.By this point my security is standing in the doorway waiting to escort us back to the car.
Me: Rose honey, you see Jack over there?
She nods excitedly.
Me: Okay baby I need you to go to Jack and wait with him. Can you do that for me?
Rose makes a beeline for Jack, he's been part of Scarlett's security team for years so Rose has grown up with him, they love each other. He picks her up and holds her whilst I deal with this now completely stupid situation.
Me: Look Miss...
Miss Carter: Carter.
Me: Miss Carter. I've been part of Rose's life now since before she could walk. She's grown up only really knowing me as another parent. I'm not interested in your company policy here. Do you read social media, Miss Carter?
Miss Carter: I do.
Me: Okay great, so you probably know who I am. You know exactly who she is and who her mother is, and based on the security detail we have, along with the ever growing line of paparazzi outside right now, I'd imagine you don't want to cause any unnecessary issues, no?
Miss Carter: But...
Me: Now I'm going to take Rose home, to her 'biological' mother, and we're going to stop for takeout on the way. I'm not interested if that isn't okay with you, Rose is my daughter. And she will be back tomorrow morning for preschool, as usual, and I will be picking her up. If it isn't me, it'll be Scarlett. Now we don't really want to homeschool Rose, she's a really bright kid and very social, but situations like this make me think that actually, if teachers can't be open minded about parental circumstances, then maybe she shouldn't be in this kind of environment. I'll see you tomorrow. Thank you.
