I grab a coffee from the machine and sit at the dinner table with breakfast, Hailee's in the gym downstairs, so I sit reading a newspaper, when the doorbell rings. I leave my stuff, and answer the door, instantly trying to shut it again to be met with resistance.

Scarlett: Wait!

She barges her way in and shuts the door behind herself. I walk back to the dinner table without acknowledging her as she follows.

Scarlett: Cute place.

I never lift my head once.

Scarlett: Can we please talk?

Again, she gets nothing.

Scarlett: Y/N please, I'm losing it here. Do you not feel anything?

Eventually, I drop my fork and put down my coffee.

Me: Do I not feel anything? Are you kidding?
Scarlett: Can we please just talk?
Me: I have absolutely nothing that I need to say to you. Don't let the door hit you on the way out, will you?
Scarlett: I understand that you're still upset, but I really think we need to talk about this, us.
Me: There is no us, you made damn sure of that when you worked yourself into his bed.
Hailee: Hey Y/N, you're out of...oh.

Hailee walks in drying her hair with a towel.

Scarlett: Convenient.

I sigh.

Me: What do you want, Scarlett?
Scarlett: I need you to talk to the kids, they won't speak to me at all and I'm worried about Cosmo.
Me: The kids are fine, I saw them yesterday.
Scarlett: What? How?
Me: Well, while you were too busy in your office, they snuck out and came here. I told Rose to tell you, but given you didn't even notice your own kids were gone.
Scarlett: You should've called me.
Me: They were safe. Look, the kids will form their own opinions whether you talk to them or I do. Let them do that, give them their own freedom. We can't tell them how to feel, I won't tell them how to feel about you or me.
Scarlett: Do you think you could take them for the week?
Me: Why? Are you and Colin not seeing each other enough already or something?
Scarlett: I'm going to Paris, so I need you to come through on this.
Me: Very romantic.
Scarlett: Y/N please, you owe me this.
Hailee: She owes you nothing for the record, but she'll take them.

I turn around to Hailee and glare, she mouths sorry.

Scarlett: Thank you.

Scarlett leaves and I turn back to Hailee.

Hailee: If you didn't say yes, you'd still be standing there arguing, and they're your kids.
Me: That's true, thank you.

The evening comes around pretty quickly, as I wrap up and get in the G Wagon with Hailee, stopping outside the gates of my old house to pick up the kids. I type the code into the gate and drive in, pulling up outside the door as it opens. I barely notice the kids get in the car, I just stare at Scarlett standing in the doorway with Colin, and it suddenly hits that that will never be me again.
