Scarlett: Y/N, Y/N! Come on honey, it's just a nightmare.
I instantly jump up as Scarlett pulls me into her.
Scarlett: You're safe, it's okay.
Me: Did I wake you up again?
Scarlett: You woke Rose up, but it's okay, her and Jess are sleeping in my bed so I can be right next door in case you have another nightmare. If you're good, I'll head back to sleep. She gets up to leave but I take her hand.
Me: Can you stay?
Scarlett: It's a single bed.
Me: So, please?I make room for her to get into the bed, then place my arm under her neck and pull her in so that her back is against my front, close enough to hear my heart beat.
Me: Can you feel it?
Scarlett: It's beating really fast.
Me: It'll slow down, you'll know when I'm having a bad dream, it basically pops right out of my chest.
Scarlett: You're okay with this?
Me: Yeah, why?
Scarlett: I just don't wanna confuse the kids.
Me: The kids know where we stand. Besides, I'm still open to trusting you, and the therapist said to be more all in, to see if it helps. If you're not okay with sleeping in here, I can manage? I might just need one of my sleeping pills maybe.
Scarlett: Being back in your arms in a bed is all I want, Y/N. I just want to make sure you're taking this at your pace.
Me: I'm good. She relaxes back into me and pulls my free arm around her, intertwining her fingers in mine.
Scarlett: Same nightmare?
Me: Yup, same nightmare.
Scarlett: Is there anything you can try to stop it?
Me: Old me would've said a bottle of whiskey and those sleeping pills, but no. The therapist said it's just going to take a long time of processing and healing. It might be like this for a while.
Scarlett: I'll read up on it, see if I can help.
Me: You don't have to read up on all of my mental health issues, Scarl. You're doing great as you are.
Scarlett: I know, I just wanna be prepared.
Me: I think you're good, trust me.The next morning I start by making breakfast for the clan, then we head a little further south, down the coast, to South Shields.
As we walk along the beach, and the kids play, I stop to take it all in.
Me: This is where I grew up, South Shields.
Scarlett: It seems nice, peaceful.
Me: We used to spend all summer on the beach or in Marine Park across the street. Every Sunday they'd have remote controlled boats on the pond, ones that people had made themselves. I'd get an ice cream with Mom and Pez from Minchella's whenever Mom wasn't at work. Dad always worked weekends, until I went to acting school, then he'd work all of his hours in the week so he could run me to and from camp.
Scarlett: You know, I could actually kill for an ice cream right now.
