"Class dismissed." Professor Watson said to his students, all of them sighing tiredly and packing their stuff, him following suit.
Sherlock, the SPCA volunteer, entered the classroom holding a box full of puppies and a brown ferret wrapped around her neck sleeping. Everyone in the classroom turned to the door and smiled, leaving their stuff on their tables to see the puppies.
Of course everyone was aware of the volunteer's intentions, for she had said she come to raise awareness and put a stop to animal cruelty but also to relieve the students of stress. She visited every time she could and always brought new pups, explaining that some of them had been adopted or are sick and being taken care of.
She placed the box on a nearby desk, stepping back so the students could interact with the puppies. She casually leaned against a wall and absentmindedly stroked her ferret gently. The professor looked at the volunteer, Sherlock seeming to have peaked his interest. And needless to say, he was quite intrigued with her choice of clothing.
Sherlock was wearing an oversized black sweater with a white outlined face of a cartoonish cat. She was also wearing dark skinny jeans and had bright blue high tops. Over it all she was wearing a long trench coat and on her head was a blue knitted beanie.
John approached her, taking advantage of her distracted with the puppies and students. "Hello." He said.
Sherlock jumped slightly, snapping her head in Proffesor Watson's direction. She gave him a faint smile and greeted back. "Hi."
"I'm Proffesor John Watson. I teach medicine here. If I may ask, who do I have the pleasure of speaking?" He asked politely, Sherlock's eyes widening slightly. The tip of her ears glowed red and her cheeks a faint shade of pink.
"I-I'm Sherlock. Sherlock Holmes." She shyly took John's extended hand and shook it firmly. "I'm a volunteer in the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals."
"That's very noble of you, Mrs. Holmes." John noticed Sherlock slightly wince at the name, quickly shaking her head.
"Please, call me Sherlock." She clarified.
John smiled. "Of course."
"Cheers." Sherlock had said later before she took the puppies to anothe room.
From that moment on when Sherlock arrived with the box of new and previous puppies, John would chat with her every time. She would repeat her goodbye everyday. Cheers.
Secretly, Sherlock brought a new puppy everyday just to try and find out the professor's favorite breed. She would hold it in her arms and show it to John before handing it to the other students.
One day, Sherlock brought a pug and brought it to John as always but the only difference is that he actually asked to hold it.
"So, you like pugs?" Sherlock said with a smile, to which John nodded enthusiastically.
"I've always wanted one." John said with a smile, but then he was slightly crestfallen. "I could never adopt a dog. I don't know how to take care of one. I couldn't even raise my tamagotchi right!" He laughed bitterly, looking down at the pug, who was now looking at him with big watery eyes.
"I could help you raise it." Sherlock's words slipped and she quickly stiffened, realizing her mistake. John turned to her with wide eyes.
"What are you inquiring, Sherlock?" He asked, the pug in his hands also turning its head to look at her.
"Let's share a flat." She suggested. "You always complained your apartment was too expensive anyway." She shrugged and avoided his gaze, not wanting to see his look of disbelief.
But John's eyes lit up and he walked closer to Sherlock, the only thing between them was a pug and a ferret. Sherlock looked up at John shyly, expecting the worst. She was taken aback with the closeness but quickly composed herself. John raised the pug and it licked Sherlock's nose, causing her to grin slightly. John pressed Sherlock and his nose together and stared deeply into her eyes.
"I would love to share a flat with you."
And they both smiled.
