Nigel:
And then Friday night came.. And because the two hadn't spoken all week it was suddenly unclear if Nigel would even be there. And yet, he was there, waiting, after the loneliness he put Alex through.
Alex:
Because I wasn't able to sleep by this all - and it was almost twelve o'clock. I took the effort to dress myself again, and sneak out of the building to get to the Aby street, right were I should met Nigel.
I pursed my lips as I saw his dark appearance sitting on a bench near the road. I could see by he's stare that he expected me, after all.
Nigel:
Nigel sat at the side of the path, having view over the train rails in front of him. He already knew Alex would be in it the second the last train stopped at the nearest station. And as usual, Nigel was right.
"Jack," he called softly, but loud enough to make Alex stop in his track. Nigel smiled up at him, again with the smug expression.
"I knew you couldn't resist a secret rendez-vous." he said in a teasing, husky voice. After that he got up and walked over to Alex' side.
"Listen.."
He started walking, expecting Alex to walk along.
"I have to tell you a story. But before you do, you have to promise me to keep an open mind about it, and don't interrupt me. If I'm going to tell you, I want you to know everything."
Alex:
I inhaled deeply and sheaf my hands into my pockets. I stared at him, with lightly narrowed eyes because of the light from the lantern above his head.
'What do you want?' I mumbled tuneless.
As he stood up and told me to listen, I swallowed and followed him on a low pass.
'Sure, go ahead,' I muttered while staring at my feet with every step that I take. Maybe I looked quite absent, as someone who didn't wanted to listen at all, I focused on Nigel his voice to conceive and understand everything he was going to tell me.
Nigel:
Nigel took a moment to study Alex' expression. Something had changed. He was.. absent.. Bored almost.. And not at all confused.
"You read my book." Nigel said suddenly, fact not question, and he smiled almost relieved. "Good.. that should make this easier for you to understand."
He looked back forward and started telling his story.
"I want to tell you about a Templar and his lover, who lived in medieval times. He was betrothed to a kind, fair lady. Her name was Maraclea. And she was the one and only treasure he ever craved. But misfortune struck, and Maraclea died before they could wed."
He cocked his head, as if he saw the scenes playing out in front of him.
"And the poor Templar was so tormented by his loss, that after the funeral, he opened her grave and made love to her body."
He let an ironic silence fall before he continued.
"Exactly nine months later he was summoned back to her grave.. as if some force made him come back, he was convinced that if he came back he'd find their unborn child. On opening her grave he saw her remains had been removed. Her skull was sitting on her thighbones, which has been crossed."
He turned back to Alex and grinned.
"Sound familiar? ..It's the skull and crossbones. The Templar and Maraclea were the very foundation of the ancient symbol, stolen by pirates. .. anyway. A voice bade him to guard the skull, for it would be the bringer of all power.. From that moment on, enemies would scare away from any battle, from the sight of the skull alone. He had become eternally invincible."
