The doctor left.

My parents came back into the room, and I lied to them.

I mean, I told them the truth but I also lied.

Because it wasn't my pancreas, but it also wasn't the flu like I told them it was.

I had been experiencing morning sickness, because after having protected sex with my boyfriend, I was now pregnant.

Pregnant.

I had told my parents I was tired so they'd leave me alone. Now I was sitting on the floor on the other side of my bed, silently crying.

"This can't be happening." I whispered to myself, burying my head in my arms that were folded on top of my knees.

"Maves?"

I jumped at the sound of Max' voice. He was standing in the door leading to the bathroom, watching me with concerned eyes.

"What's wrong?" He asked, shutting the door behind me, and then he approached me. "Flynn told me you were sick. Something about your pancreas but then it wasn't your pancreas and it was actually just the flu?"

"I'm not sick." I snapped.

Max raised his eyebrows at me, and then nodded slowly while walking over to lean against the windowsill.

"Alright..." he hesitated.

"I'm pregnant."

I didn't watch his reaction. I looked away, trying not to cry even harder, because that was fucking painful to say.

"I'm sorry what?" Max asked and he was quickly down on the floor, sitting next to me, grabbing my hand in his. "Are you sure?"

I nodded.

"The doctor did a pregnancy test."

"But— wait, you and Fred have had sex?" He asked me, and I nodded again.

"About two or three weeks ago. But we used protection."

"Oh babe." Max sighed, giving my hand a squeeze. "Condoms don't always keep you from getting pregnant."

"Then why the fuck do they exist?!" I exclaimed, throwing my head back against the bed, and I continued to cry.

Max stayed with me, comforting me while I cried until I didn't have anymore tears. I just stared at the wall, unable to properly think about this.

"Do you know what you want to do?" Max asked, gently stroking his fingers over my knuckles.

"I'm getting rid of it, obviously." I said. "But I still need to tell Fred, and what if he wants to keep it and we end up fighting over it? Babies break people up."

At that comment, Max let out a sympathetic laugh, wrapping one arm around me while holding my hand with his other.

"I can't deal with this." I sighed. "This isn't fair. We used a fucking condom!"

"I know beautiful." Max rested his head against mine. "But hey, listen... if you want me to go with you, I will. You know I will. Anything you want, Maves."

"Please don't tell Flynn." I said in a whisper. "Or anyone else."

"Of course not." He assured me. "This is your secret to tell, not mine."

"I don't know what to do right now." I whispered. "Do I go back to sleep? Do I go get something to eat? What do I usually do at this time? What time is it? I—"

"Mavis." Max cut me off, earning my attention. "Look at me."

I turned my head, and when our eyes met, another tear slid down my cheek. Max lifted his hand and used his thumb to wipe it away.
