Little Emiko Ackerman was born on that beautiful autumn day, and if we could, Levi and I would be perfectly content just remaining here for the rest of time if it meant we could savor this moment forever.
Levi settled himself onto the bed next to me, getting as comfortable as he could. I sat up next to him, allowing the doctor to take her for a few minutes to ensure that she was healthy. Levi leaned forward as he did, keeping a keen eye on our daughter the entire time. The doctor weighed her, measured her, and made sure that she was doing all that she needed to. The doctor looked up often, looking at Levi, a knowing smile on his face.
"This wasn't my first time delivering a child, believe it or not," the doctor said, "but I do believe this little darling might be the cutest one I've had the pleasure of delivering."
Levi seemed to relax at his words, but only slightly. I set a hand on Levi's arm, prompting him to lean back, though his focus remained fixed on the doctor and his movements.
"Do you have any ideas for a middle name?" I asked Levi, trying to distract him. He glanced at me briefly, allowing me to take his hand between both of mine. I traced the lines of his palm, smiling when his fingers curled around my hand in response, halting my movements but letting me know I had succeeded in pulling him away from his worries, even for a moment.
"No," he answered, looking at me. "Do you remember the names of either of your parents?"
"My real parents?" I asked, and he nodded. "No. I don't. Actually, I don't think I was ever told their names. Even if I was when I lived with my grandmother, I was far too young to remember them."
"Did Elwin have a partner?"
I nodded, but frowned right away. "Yes," I answered, "but I never met her. We don't need to name her after someone that even I haven't even met."
Levi sent me an odd look. "Her first name is my mother's middle name," he said. "You haven't met her, moron."
"That's different," I argued. "That's your mother. You met her, and she raised you for as long as she could as best you could."
"But El's partner-"
"Was not my mother," I cut in.
"I guess I never... I never asked if you were okay with naming her after her," he said slowly.
"Levi," I said gently, kissing his cheek, "that's because you didn't need to. Of course I'm okay with naming our daughter after her. In fact, I love the idea. It's a beautiful name. I told you that already, didn't I? I love the idea of naming her after your mother. She was an incredibly strong woman, and an incredible mother, so I've heard."
"You're sure," Levi asked, voice lifting in a question.
"Absolutely," I assured him.
The doctor returned then, with Emiko swaddled in a blanket. I smiled and reached for her, and the doctor placed her gently in my arms.
"Take a look at you, sweetheart," I cooed when she was securely cradled against my chest. "Let's ask you, then, my darling. Do you like the name Emiko, little one?"
Levi leaned close as though to hear her answer, trailing the backs of his fingers along her head. As if responding to my words, she opened her eyes slowly, and I held my breath as she did. Her eyelids fluttered open, revealing pretty little blue eyes - gorgeous, ethereal blue eyes that I'm certain were the same cerulean gems that her father had.
"She takes after you," I laughed, pressing my head against Levi's.
He chuckled, delicately gliding his fingers down her cheek. I wasn't sure how possible, or even if it was, but she seemed to recognize the touch of her father. Her eyelids fluttered closed, as though completely relaxed. If she was anything like me, then she would know that being in her father's arms was the safest place to be.
