"Here's where we part ways," Farlan said. "Amaya, you're up. Isabel, with me. Levi?"
"On it," Levi said simply, seriously - and not without the confidence that he usually exuded.
"Good luck, Amaya," Isabel called before the three of them took to the sky.
I watched them go, giving them a few moments to disperse before I lifted my hood over my head and stepped out of the dark alleyway. Here, at least, would be where the fun would begin. The long cloak I was wearing billowed around me as I walked down the road.
I walked hurriedly, my shoulders hunched and my head lowered, as if afraid. But no, I wasn't afraid. Far from it, actually. I was excited, anticipating what was to come - should it go to plan, that it. The right level of anxiety bubbled in my stomach as it always did at the start of any job, no matter the nature.
The road was deserted, which was for the best. I didn't want to attract unwanted attention with this little ruse of mine. I began to jog, looking over my shoulder every few paces. When I made it to the house, I double-checked the address by the door, and... yes, this was the place.
I knocked on the door rapidly, forcing my breath into an uneven pattern, as if I'd been running for hours. When there was no response, I knocked again.
"Please," I called rather desperately, leaning closer to the door.
I nearly fell over when it swung open quickly, but only enough for the man to peek out. One dark green eye met mine, for the other was submerged in shadow, and I quickly glanced over my shoulder, letting out a quiet whimper that sounded involuntary but was forced, as were the rest of my current mannerisms, body language, and words.
"Please sir," I pleaded, "let me in!"
"Why should I?"
"I'm-" I looked over my shoulder again, my eyes wide. "I'm being chased, and I have nowhere else to go! Please, please let me in!"
"I guessed that part," he sneered. "But why should I let you in? You haven't answered that part yet, trick."
I had to force the words out of my mouth, because they were so against my nature to say: "I... I'll do anything you want, sir!"
The one eyebrow I could see rose, his eye filled with interest now. He opened the door wider. He was a burly man, big and intimidating. He had a thick, unruly beard, and his eyes trailed over my body quite obviously. "Anything, you say?"
"Anything at all," I affirmed. I glanced down the street. Farlan and Isabel, in cloaks of their own, were all the way down the road, approaching by gear. "Please, they're coming!"
He reached out with both hands, taking my hood and lowering it from my head. I looked up at him with wide eyes, my eyebrows raised slightly, a purse in my lips. He glanced down the road, then seemed to make up his mind, hearing the gear.
"Come in, my dear," he said.
I did so, running into his chest. He pulled me inside, closing the door and locking it behind me. He set a hand on the small of my back, guiding me further into the house. It was decorated simply, but I knew it was just a farce.
This man was the leader of a group that wanted my own dead. We'd crossed paths before with his underlings, but never had we seen him. We'd managed to capture one of his cronies, and after only a few days tied up in our home he was ready to talk, giving up all the information he had, in exchange for freedom.
Well, we couldn't trust that, of course, so we promised that as soon as his boss was dead, he'd be freed, so he'd have no chance to go rat us out. Despite the disgust I felt in having him touch me, I played along, looking around curiously. Originally, we thought it'd be easiest to just slip in and kill him, but we knew that he had a small fortune saved up, but he was notoriously good at hiding.
