Luna woke up wrapped in a warm embrace. At first, she thought she was still dreaming. Her nightmare had been replaced with a dream that Luna didn't want to wake up from. She was with Bucky, sitting on the shore of the lake outside the compound. The sun was setting and her head was leaned over on his shoulder. The crushing weight that she normally felt was gone and she felt happy and unhindered for the first time in her life. They didn't talk or throw jabs at each other, they just sat peacefully watching the sun sink from the sky.
She didn't want to leave her dream world, but waking up in Bucky's arms as the early morning sun slipped between the gaps of the curtain was almost as good as her dream. Luna pressed closer into his side and rested her head higher on his shoulder. She knew today would be the last day of their mission. If everything went the way it was supposed to, they'd catch Thomas handing over the bombs and they'd be able to wrap up the whole thing before night fell. Bucky had reassured her that no matter what happened when the mission ended, that he wanted to continue whatever was going on between them, she just wasn't sure how that would work once they were back in the compound.
She didn't want the team finding out about what had happened to her. It was bad enough that Bucky knew. But the whole team knowing? She didn't want to deal with the looks of pity or even worse—disgust. That was one of her biggest fears when she told Bucky about her father and Liam. It didn't matter how their relationship started, by the time Bucky had figured out most of her secrets, Luna was already falling for him. As much as she tried denying every tingle she felt when he touched her or the warmth that spread over her body when he vowed to keep her safe, she couldn't deny it any longer. She was in love with him.
Luna untangled herself from Bucky's embrace and grabbed her phone off the table next to the bed. Megan had texted her asking her to come over for lunch. From the tone of her text, something was wrong. The team would be arriving in a few hours, but this could be Luna's chance to get information about Ethan. Maybe Megan would finally open up to her about how she got herself and her son mixed up in this bullshit. Luna typed out a quick message hoping that Megan would accept her counter-offer. She needed to try and get the woman to talk.
Luna: Noah and I have a thing around lunch time, but could you do coffee around nine? I'll bring some of the pastries you like from your favorite German bakery.
Megan: Yeah! Sounds like a plan. Thank you, Anna. Really, your friendship means so much to me.
Luna's heart constricted and she felt a pang of guilt. All of her senses were telling her that Megan was innocent. She had been dealt a hand that she couldn't get rid of and now she was suffering. It wasn't common for Luna to feel anything for people she encountered on missions, but she saw a glimpse of herself in Megan and she'd be damned if she let Megan go through half of the pain and agony she had been through.
Luna rushed into the bathroom to shower. It was already seven and she still had to run into town to grab the pastries. Luna twisted her hair onto the top of her hair and then started the shower. She hung her towel on the rod next to the shower door and then froze when her fingers ran over the bare skin of her ring finger.
"Oh fuck!" Luna yelled.
She snatched her towel from the rack and ran back into the bedroom as she wrapped it around herself.
"Bucky! Bucky, wake up!" Luna yelled and shook him violently.
"What?! I'm up! I'm up."
Bucky jumped out of the bed and looked around frantically until his eyes settled on Luna. He rubbed the sleep from his eyes and gave her a sleepy smile.
"If you wanted me to shower with you, doll, all you had to do was ask."
"Now is not the time to be a horny bastard, Bucky! It's gone!" Luna exclaimed.
