Luna woke up on the bed with her pen still in her hand and her face laying on her notebook. She had fallen asleep researching the information from Thomas's office and jotting down notes about what she found. She looked at the clock and saw that it was just after midnight. The room was quiet and there were no other lights on besides the lamp next to the bed. Bucky was supposed to switch places with her so she could take a shift running surveillance. She stood and yawned, stretching her arms above her head, then cleaned the papers and files from the bed.
It felt like they were no closer to getting the information they needed than when they started. Besides the meeting they were able to spy on and the little bit of information Luna had found in the office, they were still in the dark about what Thomas was working on. It could be a bomb, could be some type of device to release a lethal chemical into the UN meeting. Hell, it could even be something to release some deadly fucking disease, but they couldn't be sure until they found more information. Luna was already planning on checking out the factories that Thomas had property titles for. With any luck, that's where he was building whatever the hell he had been working on.
Luna was still exhausted from her time spent with Megan. She had been able to slowly work her way into a casual friendship with Megan. They would often have lunch or go shopping together while Bucky was 'working'. Occasionally, they'd just hang out at each other's houses. Megan seemed harmless. The only truly negative thing Luna could say about Megan was that she was a little over enthusiastic to have a friend. Megan seemed like the type to bend over backwards for those she cared about. The woman didn't have a mean bone in her body. But then again, Luna wasn't the best judge of character.
You would think that after dealing with her father's abuse, she would be able to see people for who they really were, but you would be wrong. The one time she made the decision to share every part of herself with someone, the good and the bad, he used it as ammunition and it nearly got her killed. He played the good guy so well at first. He made her believe that he wanted to protect her and help heal all the broken parts inside of her, but the devil wears many masks. That time it just so happened to be one with dirty blonde hair and chocolate brown eyes who spoke sweet words and made empty promises.
She'd like to say she fell into his lies because she was young and stupid, but she was in her mid-twenties and was tired of living her life alone. After the dust had settled from the havoc he wreaked on her life, she compartmentalized all of her feelings and her trauma, tucking them away and hoping they'd rot away with time. Luna swore off relationships of any kind, rather it be romantic or platonic. She had been hurt enough to finally see that being alone was the only way to protect the little piece of sanity that she still clung to. Being alone with Bucky was making her question that decision and she both loved and hated that feeling.
Luna walked out of the bedroom and looked around the first floor for Bucky, but he was nowhere to be seen. He must still be upstairs seeing if he can catch anything from the listening devices she had been able to plant inside the house over the last few weeks. She made a cup of coffee and walked up the stairs to the surveillance room. Bucky sat at one of the desks with headphones over his head, eyes scanning a monitor for activity. Luna slowly approached him and laid her hand on his shoulder. He turned around startled and grabbed her wrist in his hand.
"Sorry about that." He said, releasing her wrist and rubbing his eyes. "Just a little sleep deprived."
"It's okay. Here." She held the cup out to him. "I brought you coffee."
"Thanks, doll." He grabbed the cup from her and took a sip.
"You know you don't have to call me doll when we're not around Megan or Thomas. I've noticed that you do that a lot."
