Luna clutched her stomach as she watched Thomas's eyes fill with terror and the life drained from his eyes. He fell backwards onto the concrete with a loud thud. Her pulse thundered in her ears as she realized she had actually killed him. As provoked as she felt, her intention wasn't to actually kill him. Hurt him until he spent the rest of his life with a permanent limp and a fucked up jaw, sure. But to kill him?
She had killed targets on previous missions, but only because they gave her no choice. The only person she had ever willingly murdered was her father and that was a kill or be killed type of situation. Thomas was a threat and, even though every fiber of her being wanted to kill him when she found out he had Bucky, she knew that they needed him alive. Her plan was to disarm and subdue him, not murder him. That wasn't who she was.
When she heard the gun go off and the bullet entered her stomach, she panicked. Once Thomas realized she had been shot and was no longer a threat, he would've turned the gun on Bucky. He was trained for these types of situations, but there was still a chance Thomas could kill him and Luna didn't want to take that risk. No matter how mad she was at him or how badly he had messed up, he was her partner and she would always have his back. So she did the only thing she could think to do at that moment to protect Bucky.
Luna winced as she tried to push herself to her feet and fell back to the floor with a groan. She pulled her hand away from her stomach and found it covered with blood and more seeping from her wound. Luna reached down and ripped off a piece of Thomas's shirt to plug the bullet hole and hopefully slow down the bleeding. She pushed herself up again only to fall back to her knees.
"Shit." She whispered. "Uh, Bucky. I-I think I might need a little help."
Luna felt lightheaded and she couldn't hold herself upright anymore. Bucky's body finally kicked in and he realized Luna had been shot in the scuffle with Thomas. As she fell backwards, she felt Bucky's hand cup the back of her head and his arm weave around her waist to slow her fall.
"It's gonna be alright, doll. I-I'm here." Bucky said, his voice thick with emotion. "I'm going to find my phone and call Steve. I'll be back in just a minute. Stay awake, Luna."
Bucky searched around the room and finally found his phone. He gave Steve a quick rundown of what had happened and told him that Tony needed to get an ambulance to the factory as soon as possible then hung up. He knelt down next to Luna and placed his hand over her wound to apply pressure. She hissed as he pressed down on her stomach. Worry creased his brow and Luna felt his hand begin to tremble against her skin. To ease his fear, Luna did what she did best—she made light of the situation.
"Tony's gonna be so mad." Luna chuckled even though her face was scrunched in pain. "Not only did I get myself shot, I killed Thomas—which apparently was a big no-no."
"Don't talk right now, LuLu. Tony is sending an ambulance and I need to get you outside. Hold your hand here for me and press down as hard as you can." Bucky placed her hand on her stomach. "I'm going to pick you up, okay?"
"Mhmm."
Bucky picked Luna up gently and cradled her in his arms. Luna screamed as the movement caused a searing pain to shoot through her abdomen.
"Bucky, stop! Put me down. I-I can't." Luna gasped.
"Okay, okay." Bucky laid her back on the floor. "Fuck, I'm so sorry, doll. This is my fault."
"Yeah, m-maybe just a b-bit." Luna stuttered out.
"I'm serious, Luna. I should've listened to you. It's my fault you got shot." Bucky's tears crested over the rim of his eyes and fell down his cheeks.
"Aww, don't cry, iceman. I-it's not like I-I'm dying or anything." Luna joked, but in reality, seeing him cry because she was hurt made her heart break.
