Luna couldn't move or speak. She had covered her tracks. The house wasn't bought in her name. She hadn't used a credit card and she had ditched her cell phone. How? How was he here, sitting on her bed? She took a step backwards as her breathing accelerated, but he stood and ran to grab her. He pulled her into the room and shut the door behind her. He flipped the lock and pulled her over to the bed, pushing on her shoulder gently until she was sitting. He grabbed her hand and placed a small kiss on her knuckles.
"I've missed you so much, Lu." His grey eyes peered up at her.
"How did you find me, Liam?"
"Oh, sweetheart." He chuckled lightly. "Next time you want to hide, don't buy property in your dead mother's name."
Luna cringed as he ran his lips over the back of her hand and placed another kiss on her skin. Luna's mind was a whirlwind of questions. Why wasn't he attacking her? Was he going to try and kill her? Why was he acting like he had just found his long lost love? Was this all an act to make her feel comfortable with him? She wanted an answer to all of her questions, but only one rolled off her tongue.
"Why are you here?" Luna asked, her voice sounding stronger than she felt.
"I'm here to take you home with me, Lu. Where you belong."
"I'm not going anywhere with you, Liam."
"Don't be silly, sweetheart. Of course you are. You're my girl and–."
"I'm not your anything anymore!" Luna pulled her hand back and stood up. "That part of my life ended the night you almost killed me!"
Liam's jaw ticked and his eyes flicked with a cold fury. He recovered and hid his anger, letting a warm smile curve his lips.
"I've changed, Luna. I've thought about that night often over the past three years and I can't explain how sorry I am."
Luna scoffed and moved closer to the bedroom door. She didn't take her eyes off Liam, remembering the last time she turned her back on him. She reached behind her back for the doorknob, but Liam rushed forward and caged her in against the door.
"Lu, please. Don't be scared of me." Liam whispered. "I'm not going to hurt you."
Luna turned her face away and fought off the laugh that was threatening to push its way up her throat. It was all a lie. She knew what he was capable of. She couldn't believe a word he said. Everything that came out of his mouth was complete bullshit. If she did or said something he didn't like, he'd have no problem showing his true colors.
"I'm not scared of you. Not anymore." Luna gritted out.
"I can see your fear." Liam said and reached up to rub his thumb over her cheek. "You don't need to be scared. I want you by my side, Lu. I know that you've figured out what Wagner is up to. Help us and you can have everything you've ever wanted."
"I don't know what you're talking about." Luna feigned ignorance.
"Yes, you do. We both know you aren't stupid, Luna. Once Wagner has the presidency, I'll be reinstated to the CIA. He's even promised me the Deputy Director of Operations position. If you help us, he could appoint you to a leadership position as well."
"You aren't qualified for that position." Luna growled.
"My qualifications don't matter if the President of the United States assigns me that position, especially in a time of crisis when the nation thinks we've been attacked by terrorists. Help us, Lu. We could finally live out our dreams together."
"No. I will never help you, Liam. Doesn't matter what you do to me. I'll never agree to that."
Liam's lips pressed into a hard line and his eyes darkened. He thought he could come in, give her a half-assed apology, and try to sweet talk her into committing treason. He really was delusional. She would never betray her country and she sure as fuck wouldn't forgive him. She watched his mask fall and crumble, being replaced with a hard indifference.
