* * *
Daphne had no idea what to genuinely do. She had never been in a situation like this before. In fact, she was certain that no one else had been in a situation like this before. How was anything that was currently happening in her life normal? Daphne finally noticed that the boys were bombarding the young girl with questions.
"Is there a number we can call for your parents?"
"Where's your hair?"
"Did you have cancer?"
"Are you in some kind of trouble?"
"Is that blood?"
Daphne interjected quickly, "Oi, stop it. You are all freaking her out."
Lucas just gasped up at Daphne, "She's freaking me out!"
"I bet she's deaf." Dustin's outburst caused the group to grow silent. He looked back at the girl again before he clapped his hands in her face but she flinched back, "Not deaf."
"Okay, I think that's enough of prodding and poking at her." Daphne waved all of them away from her, "She's obviously scared and cold. She was out in the rain with just an oversized shirt on."
Mike quickly ran to the pile of laundry and came back with some clothes, "Here, these are clean. Okay?"
The young girl reached and took the dry clothes from him. She rubbed it against her cheek before dropping the coat Daphne had given her off of her shoulders. She then reached for the hem of her shirt but right before she could do anything. Daphne gasped out and stopped her, "No, no!"
"Oh, my God!" Dustin repeated under his breath as he covered his head with his hands. All Lucas could do was repeat 'No'.
"You see over there." Mike pointed at the bathroom, "That's the bathroom. Privacy. Get it?"
Daphne exhaled before she slowly reached her hand out for the girl to take, "Here. Let's go together, okay?"
In silence, she accepted Daphne's hand but was still rather timid. She kept close to Daphne as Mike trailed behind them as well, clearly intrigued with the mysterious girl. As Daphne got there, she moved to clear and close the door, but the girl stopped her.
Mike looked on in confusion, "You don't want it closed?"
For a fraction of a second, the girl contemplated in silence before a soft response came from her, "No..."
"Oh, so you can speak." Mike looked at Daphne before he turned back, "Okay, well, um, how about we just keep the door just like this-" He moved it so there was a small crack in the door, "Is that better?"
"No."
"Would you like me to stay with you?" Daphne asked and received a nod from her, "Alright. I'll stay. It's okay, Mike."
