After being back on campus from their summer break. Everyone was beginning to grow used to their new lives in Hawkins. It was already October and the friend group was already discussing ideas for Halloween costumes. Though, Daphne was a little out of whenever they would ask her. She didn't seem to care or really want to go out for Halloween, despite it being her favorite holiday.
It was another day of school, Mabel was seated in Steve's car as she read over his college essay. He had asked if she could look it over. Mabel had asked why he didn't have Nancy do it, and he just said he was nervous of her judging him for it. She even suggested Daphne, but she figured Daphne wouldn't really want to do it.
Steve continued to stare at her closely, watching her reaction before he just fell back into his seat, "It's crap, I know."
"Crap is being... delicate." Mabel murmured honestly to him. He at least needed the truth and not some sugar coated response, "Steve-"
"Damn it." Steve took his essay back from her, "Damn it. Damn it."
Mabel winced a little bit and sighed before she leaned in closer, "Okay-" She took the paper back from him, "So... in the first paragraph, you used a really good metaphor. Talking about the basketball game versus Northern to like... exemplify your life. That was great." She dug through her backpack for a pen so she could mark it, "But then, you kind of ramble about your granddad's experiences in the war, which don't really connect with what you previously stated about the basketball game."
He stared at Mabel and then back down at the paper and then back up at Mabel, "It... uh... it connects because-because, you know, we both won..." His voice trailed off before he let out an exaggerated groan, "Do you think I should just start over from scratch."
"If you have the time, I would start over." Mabel admitted to him, "Maybe focusing on one topic over having multiple. I mean, an entire essay about your granddad's experiences in the war could definitely make colleges want to accept your application. When is the deadline?"
"Tomorrow."
"Ah..." Mabel puffed her cheeks out as she sank down in her seat.
"M-maybe you can just come over tonight and help me with it."
"You already have plans, Steve." Mabel pointed out as she handed him his essay back, "You promised Nancy that you would go to dinner with the Hollands."
"Oh, my God-" Steve exclaimed, "I-"
"Don't be a dick." Mabel pressed. She was not the biggest fan of Nancy, after all, she noticed that Nancy was treating Daphne badly. "You have canceled on Nancy so many times already. If you do it again, she is going to be really upset."
"I can't-" Steve choked and looked out the window of his car, "It's not exactly easy going there. And Nancy brings Marcus all of the time and I just-"
Mabel watched as he looked at her, "No."
