Marcus was staring outside the window during class when the principal opened the door with Nancy behind it. "Hello, we'd like to borrow Mister Muller."
"Of course." The teacher nodded his head, "Mister Muller, the homework is written on the board. Did you get it written down?"
"Yeah-" Marcus grabbed his things and stuffed his textbook inside. He walked out of the classroom, "Nancy-" His voice was low as he glanced at the principal guiding them, "What is happening?"
"I-You know Daphne and I don't have anyone that knows her well." Nancy admitted.
Marcus looked at her in confusion, "So this is about the whole Daphne and Barb situation? I know I shouldn't have listened in on your conversation earlier... You think they were taken, right?"
Nancy nodded her head in response, "It's the only thing that could make sense."
Marcus' eyes landed on who he could only assume was Mrs. Wheeler. He winced a bit as he got incredibly uncomfortable. There was no way he could deal with any of this. He needed Burgundy or Mabel to be here instead.
Mrs. Wheeler smiled over at Marcus, "Hi, you must be one of Daphne's friends and a new friend of Nancy." All Marcus could do was nod his head up and down slowly while twiddling his fingers. He looked at the police officers. He didn't do well with cops. They made him nervous.
"This argument you and Barbara had?" One of them asked, "What exactly was it about?"
Nancy leaned forward and exhaled, "It wasn't really an argument. Barb and Daphne, they just wanted to leave. I didn't so I told them to just go home..."
"Then what?"
"Then I went upstairs to put on some dry clothes." Nancy's answer was slow and a little forced, as though she had been thinking about this answer for some time now.
"And the next day, you went back and saw a bear, you're thinking?"
She just sank back in her chair as she mumbled, "I don't know what it was, but I think-I think maybe it took Barb and Daphne. You need to check Steve's house-"
"We did. There's nothing there. There's no sign of a bear. And no car."
"What?" Nancy demanded in shock as she sat up straight. She had gone back and had even seen Barb's car for herself.
"Look. We figure that Barbara came back last night and then she took off, went somewhere. We believe since Daphne was an orphan, she probably convinced Barbara to run away with her. Has she ever spoken about running away before?"
"No-"
Marcus cut her off as his own irritation took over, "Excuse me, but are you accusing Daphne of something?"
"We're just thinking of every possibility."
"No-" Nancy shook her head, "Barb wouldn't do that, ever."
