Mabel still tried to find her friends but could even find them, it seemed as if they had left... without telling her. It did not feel good to know that they all may be doing something without her. If it weren't for the kids, maybe she would spiral into a fit of sadness, but she was grateful to have a bunch of kids to distract her. Dustin had practically pulled her to the table with him where Mr. Clark was sitting.

"So, you know how in Cosmos, Carl Sagan talks about other dimensions? Like, beyond our world?"

Mr. Clark hadn't expected the sudden question, he knew they had questions for him but hadn't expected them to immediately start, "Yeah, sure. Theoretically."

"Right." Mike said a quick agreement, "Theoretically."

"So, theoretically, how do we travel there?" Lucas added in. He was clearly anxious by how he was rapidly tapping his foot against the ground.

Mr. Clark smiled at the kids with pride, "You guys have been thinking about Hugh Everett's Many-Worlds Interpretation, haven't you?"

Mabel widened her eyes in confusion, "Uh... What?"

"Well, basically, there are parallel universes." Mr. Clark smiled over at her, "Just like our world, but just infinite variations of it. Which means there's a world out there where none of this tragic stuff ever happened."

"Yeah..." Lucas shook his head, "That's not what we're talking about."

"Oh?"

"We were thinking more of an evil dimension, like the Vale of Shadows." Dustin stated as he continued to eat vanilla wafers, "You know the Vale of Shadows?"

"An echo of the Material Plane, where necrotic and shadow magic-"

"Yeah, exactly." Mike quickly cut him off before he could completely geek out, "If that did exist, a place like the Vale of Shadows, how would we travel there?"

"Theoretically." Mabel added.

"Well... picture an acrobat standing on a tightrope." Mr. Clark began to draw a diagram on a paper plate for them to understand it better, "Now, the tightrope is our dimension. And our dimension has rules. You can move forwards, or backwards. But, what if right next to our acrobat, there is a flea? Now, the flea can also travel back and forth, just like the acrobat. Right?"

"Right."

"Here's where things get really interesting. The flea can also travel this way along the side of the rope. He can even go underneath the rope."

All the boys gasped as they whispered, "Upside Down."

"Exactly."

Mabel leaned back in her chair, "But... we're not the flea, we're the acrobat."

"In this metaphor, yes, we're the acrobat."

"So, we can't go upside down?"

"No." Mr. Clark watched as they all grew upset and clearly disappointed by this information.
