“It's okay. You'll be fine after your surgery in a couple hours.” I tell her, rocking her back and forth, making her calm down. After almost an hour, Mark comes in. I hand her over to him and watch him hold her.

“How much longer until her surgery?” He asks, looking over at me.

“About an hour.” I tell him. He nods and looks back down at Zola.

“I just hope it goes well.” I say after a few minutes of silence.

“It will. What could go wrong with you, Lexie, and Amelia in there?” He asks me, smiling a little.

“I don't know. She could hemorrhage, she could go brain dead, she-she could go paralyzed, she could-”

“She won't.” He says, walking over and giving me a kiss. We just stand there for a little longer, until it's time for Zola's surgery. A nurse comes and takes her for pre-op.

“Look at me. Everything's going to be fine. The surgery's going to go great, then we can work on adopting Zola. It'll be fine.” He reassures me, pulling me into a hug and rubbing my back. I smile and walk towards OR 1, where the surgery will be at. I scrub in and go into the room, letting the nurses put my gloves and surgical gown on. I look up in the gallery and see mom, dad, Archer, and Mark watching me.

“Ok. It's a great day to save lives, people. Let's do this. Scalpel.” I say, reaching my hand out for the scalpel. I cut into her back and proceed with the surgery.

“Placing the spinal cord and exposed tissue back into the body and covering them with muscles and skin.” I say, telling Amelia how far I am into it.

“Placing the shunt.” Amelia tells me.

“Okay. Time to close up.” I call. After closing up, we let the nurses take Zola back to her room. We walk out of the OR and hug each other. Mark comes up behind me and pulls me into him.

“See. I told you it'd go great.” He says, giving me a peck on the lips.

“I know. I know.” I say, smiling a little.

“So. When do we get to meet her?” Mom asks, hugging me. I smile at her.

“Well. She should wake up in the next 4 hours. So, whenever she wakes up.” I tell her.

“Ok. Just page us when she does.” Dad says, kissing my forehead before walking off with mom.

“So. Now that the surgery's over with, when do you want to see a social worker when we get off in a little while.” Mark asks me, smiling.

“When we get off in a little while.” I reply, returning the smile.

“Ok. Page me when she wakes up.” He says, walking away. I turn towards Lexie and Amelia.

“We told you the surgery would go great.” Amelia says, hugging me along with Lexie.
