"I know. I have a few patients I need to check on. Page me when she wakes up." I tell them, walking towards the bomb patient's room. When he and his wife see me, they smile.
"Hello Dr. Sloan." His wife greets me.
"Hello Mrs. Miller" I greet her back. I then turn to her husband.
"How are you Mr. Miller? Any pain recently?" I ask, checking his bandages and stitches.
"No. No pain." He says, smiling.
"That's good. I think you can be discharged tomorrow." I tell him, making him smile even more.
"that's great!" He exclaims.
"It sure it. I'll be back later with the forms." I tell them, walking out the room and towards Luck Clark's room.
"Hey Lucy. How are you doing?" I ask as I walk into the room.
"I'm good Dr. Sloan." She says, smiling.
"Any pain?"
"A little bit." She tells me.
"Ok. I'll get a nurse to bring you some medicine then." I tell her, walking off to find a nurse or intern. Sadly, the only one I see if Thompson. So, I go up to her.
"Thompson, Lucy Clark, room 217, needs some medicine for her pain. Go give some to her." I order. She nods and runs off. I then start heading towards Patricia Barker's room. When I enter, she's holding her Lilly. She looks up at me and smiles.
"Hey. I just thought I should come check on you. Any pain?" I ask her.
"No. I'm doing fine. So is Lilly." She says, smiling again.
"Good. I talked to Dr. Webber earlier and he said that Riley's doing great and that you should be able to go home the day after tomorrow." I tell her. She smiles even bigger.
"Thank you so much Dr. Sloan." She says, hugging me.
"No problem." I tell her.
"Where's Dr. Montgomery?" She asks, curious. I look down at the floor.
"She, along with my other two sisters, were in a car accident the day I took Lilly home. They're still in the hospital, just as patients." I explain.
"I'm so sorry." She tells me, putting a comforting hand on my shoulder.
"It's okay. They should be getting discharged soon anyways." I say, looking back at her.
"How bad were they hurt?" She asks me.
"Meredith, the oldest, her spleen ruptured and she also had a brain bleed. Teddy, the second oldest, has a broken femur and pelvis. Addy- Addison- who's the third oldest was in the worst state with a brain bleed and a torn pericardium, which is a tear in the fluid sac around the heart." I explain to her. She nods in understanding and then smiles a little.
"Well, I'm glad that their alright." She says.
"Yeah. Well, I've go to go. I'll be back in before you get discharged to do one more checkup on you and the baby." I tell her, walking out of the room and over towards the ER desk. When I get closer, I see Mark, talking with mom and dad.
"Hey. I'm off in about 30 minutes, then we can go." I tell Mark when I finally reach them.
"Ok. I've got about 15 more before I get off." He says, wrapping his arm around me. After a few more minutes of talking, Lexie and Amelia come up to us.
"Bella. She's awake." Amelia says, smiling at me. Mmark and I look at each other, then at mom and dad, and swiftly walk towards Zola's room. As soon as I see her, I pick her up and laugh as she cuddles into my side. Mark then reaches over and takes her from me. I laugh even more when she cries and reaches out for me, trying to get out of his arms and back into mine. I then turn towards mom and dad to see them smiling at us.
"Mom, dad, this is Zola." I tell them.
"She's so adorable." Mom says, taking her from me and holding her. Then, dad gets her from mom and holds her for a few minutes before she starts crying again for me to hold her. So, I reach over and grab her from dad. As soon as she's in my arms again, she calms down.
"She already loves you." Mark says, looking at us. I look up at him and give him a kiss on the lips, which he gladly accepts.
"She loves you too." I say when we pull apart. After a little while longer, we look at what time it is and then look back at each other, smiling.
"Are you ready?" He asks.
"I'm ready. Are you?" I ask, him back. He nods and we turn to mom and dad.
"We're about to go see a social worker. You can stay in her if you'd like." I tell them. They smile at us and mom comes over and takes Zola from me again. I smile as I hug her and dad. Mark and I walk out of the room and finally out of the hospital, towards the court house to talk to a social worker. When we get there, we are immediately taken to an office to talk.
"Dr. Sloan, Dr. Sloan. It's so nice of you to come. What can I do for you?" Fern, the social worker asks.
"Well, a few days ago, one of the residents came up with a way to bring African children over for medical help. Zola, the patient I was assigned to, was a 6 month old with Spina Bifida. She was also an orphan. After Mark and I talked about it, we decided that we wanted to adopt her." I explain, looking at Fern.
"Ok. First, we need to do a background check, even though I know you're fine, then we will do a home inspection and decide if you can adopt her or not." She tells us, smiling. Mark and I smile back and nod.
"Ok. Thank you. How long will all of that take?" I ask, curious.
"It should only take a couple of weeks." She tells me. I look at Mark and smile.
