“I cannot wait any longer till for Zola to be ours,” I whined to Mark, gently bouncing Zola in my arms while Lilly was asleep in Mark’s.

“Honey, Fern said that it should only take a week more. We already passed the inspections and background checks with flying colors. Besides, Zola is already ours, just like Lilly,” smiles Mark, looking fondly at Zola’s smiling face and placing gentle kisses on mine and Lilly’s forehead’s.

“They are going to be so happy in each other’s company,’’ a whispered to Mark about Zola and Lilly, as Zola rests her head against my shoulder, fast asleep.

Mark smiles and nods his head. “I am going to take Lilly home. When does your shift get over?” asks Mark.

“In another hour. You and Lilly carry on home. I’ll sit with Zola for a while and then check up once on my patients and the girls (Addy, Meredith, Teddy) and I will be home too,” I answer, gently laying Zola down in her hospital crib. I give Mark and Lilly kisses and sit next to Zola’s bed to make sure she goes off to sleep peacefully. Within minutes, my pager goes off. 911.  “Damn it”, I mutter and rush off to Lucy Clark’s room.

“What the hell happened?”I ask Karev, who is frantically performing CPR and yelling commands at the nurses. “She suddenly coded twelve minutes ago and she is not coming back”, Karev answers in a panic. “Twelve minutes? Why the hell was I paged now?”I yell at Karev as I take the paddles from him. He just shrugs helplessly and moves out of the way. “Charge to 300!”I command.

After three more attempts, her heart finally comes back. I take a deep breath as everyone sighs in relief. I turn to Karev, but he is outside the room, talking to Lucy’s boyfriend. As protocol demands, I check her pupils and my heart drops as there is no pupillary response.

“Page neuro, STAT!”I ordered the nurse. She nodded and in five minutes, Derek entered the room.

“What’s wrong?”He asks me in concern. “This is Lucy Clark. She came in to get treated for pains and had a minor surgery. She coded for fifteen minutes but we were able to get her back. She has no pupillary response, so I need you to perform the necessary tests to declare whether she is brain dead or not,” I say softly.

Derek then becomes Dr.Shepherd and orders a CT while checking her response to pain and light, later examining the CT carefully.

After fifteen minutes, Derek turns to face me. “I am sorry Bella, but she had an aneurism and is brain dead. You have to inform the family and take her off of life support in the next 48 hours,” he says.

I nod, as he walks out of the room to answer another page. I sigh and walk out of the room. Lucy’s parent and her boyfriend stand up from their seats as soon as they see me. I take a deep breath. Telling this family that their Lucy was brain dead was not going to be a pleasant thing.

“Is she okay?” ”What happened?” her parents asked me, worry coloring their voices.

“Lucy had a brain aneurism. This caused her heart to stop for fifteen minutes. It is rare, but due to her heart stopping combined with the aneurism, there was too much pressure on her brain and her body. I am so sorry to tell you this, but Lucy is now brain dead. Her body may still be working, but she will never wake up and the law requires us to take her off of life support within the next 48 hours. I am so sorry for your loss,” I tell Lucy’s parents and her boyfriend. Her parents start crying in each other’s arms and I get up and turn around to walk off and give them privacy, but stop when I feel a hand on my shoulder. I come face to face with Lucy’s boyfriend.

“How can you be so sure? You were barely in her room for five minutes! Dr. Karev said she was fine now! What sort of a doctor are you?” he yelled at me, as a few people looked at him in shock.

“Our best neurosurgeon declared her brain dead too, besides me. I am very sorry for your loss and I wish that there was something else that I could do”, I tell him sadly.

He shakes his head furiously, his eyes blazing with anger and hurt.

“No, you are lying! That cannot happen to my Lucy! What the hell sort of doctor are you!? “He yells, shoving me against a wall.

Before I can react, his hand connects with my face. I wince in pain but I feel his weight being pushed off of me. I open my eyes and see familiar blonde curls. Arizona Robbins. Her fist connects with his face, mirroring his previous action on me. He staggers back, holding his jaw in pain. Before he can charge back, Karev and Avery are on the scene, along with security, dragging him out of the building.

She turns to face me. “Are you okay Bella?” she asks, her blue eyes wide in concern.

“I’ll survive,” I say with a smile. “That was one hell of a punch”

“I am a military brat,” she replies with a wink.

“Arizona, honey, what the hell happened?” came Callie Torres’ voice as ran towards Arizona in concern.

“Calliope, you know how families of patients are when they are upset and under pressure, “says Arizona, downplaying the incident and hiding her hand behind her back.

“Why did he do that though?” she turned around to ask me, her eyebrows pulling together in confusion.

“I just told him that his girlfriend is brain dead,” I reply sadly.

Arizona nods, “Well, he had reason to get upset, but attacking you was out of line.”

“Wait, attack?” Callie asks in confusion, looking pointedly at Arizona.

“Well….” Arizona trails off, looking down at her feet.

Callie grabs her hand and we both gasp at the bruising on her knuckles.

“Well, you better explain what happened while I clean this wound up,” commands Callie, her eyes filled with worry and concern, as she drags Arizona away. Arizona looks at me apologetically and smiles. I smile back, but turn around when I hear footsteps.

“What happened Bells? Karev paged me and said that some guy went crazy on you! Who the hell was that and where is he?” Mark asks in anger.

“Relax Mark, take a deep breath. I am here, without a scratch,” I try to soothe Mark.

He calms down slowly and asks, “What happened?”

“Well, remember Lucy Clark?” I ask Mark and he nods.

“She coded and had a brain aneurism. She is now brain dead. I went to inform her family and her boyfriend and to tell them what the necessary procedures were. Her boyfriend went in denial and shoved me against the wall. Before it could get any worse, Arizona went all military brat on him and then security took him away. I am fine now, but Arizona slightly hurt her hand, and Callie is now fixing her up. I am going to clock out and let’s go back home to Lilly, okay?” I ask Mark.

He nods but says,”You clock out and I’ll meet you outside in a few minutes.”

I nod and walk off to instruct Karev to page me as soon as the Clark family has said their goodbyes. I make a mental note to thank Arizona properly the next day; after all she did save me from getting physically damaged. I smile, imagining me and Mark going home every day, to our beautiful little princesses, Lilly and soon to be, Zola.
