“22 year old woman, trapped in a burning building, collapsed lung, and brain bleed. Her neighbor said her name is Lucy Clark.” The medic says, handing me the chart.
“Alright, go prep an OR. Karev, Yang, Stevens, your scrubbing in.” I tell them as we head to the burn unit.
*In surgery*
“Damn it. Her brain is starting to swell and her bleed is worse than we thought.” Amelia says.
“Her body is covered in third degree burns from head to toe.” Mark explains.
“Her lung is collapsed and her heart is slowing down.” I tell them.
*After surgery*
We are now walking to the patient's room where her boyfriend and relatives are waiting for her to wake up. I walk hand in hand with Mark, and Amelia is beside us. As soon as they see us coming in, they stand up and ask us question after question.
“Hello. I am Dr. Sloan and this is Dr. Sheperd and this is my husband, Dr. Sloan. We performed Lucy's surgery.”
“How was her surgery? I-is she going to be okay?” They ask.
“The surgery didn't go as well a we hoped, but we think it was a success.” I tell them.
“You think? You're doctors, your supposed to know!” Her boyfriend shouted at us.
“Mr. Stanford, your girlfriend had third degree burns from head to toe, a collapsed lung, a swelling and a bleed in her brain, and her heart was starting to fail. We don't know how she will respond when she wakes up. All brain surgeries are like that. We have to wait and see.” Amelia told him. Once he heard that, he calmed down and sat back in his seat.
“Alright. Thank you, and I'm sorry for yelling at you like that.” He tells us.
“Don't be. Your just worried about your girlfriend. I'd, well I did the same thing.” I said, making everyone look at me with confused expressions.
“What do you mean?” The patient's mother asked. I take in a deep breath.
“Yesterday, I had to bring in Dr. Sloan and I's newborn daughter because she was coughing up blood and we didn't know why. She has to stay here for a few days while my sister looks after her.” I tell them. They all look at me with sympathetic faces and Mark holds and kisses my hand, while Amelia rubs my back in a soothing way.
“I'm so sorry. Is she going to be okay?” The mother asks.
“Yes. My sister said she just has to be watched for a couple of da-”
“Dr. Sloan, Dr. Montgomery told me to bring her to you when she wakes up and starts crying.” Izzy says, coming in with Lilly and handing her over to me.
“Thank you, Dr. Stevens.” I tell her as she walks away. I look down at Lilly in my arms.
“Is this her? Your daughter?” They ask.
“Yes. This is our daughter, Lilly.” I tell them, smiling at Mark.
“She's beautiful. I hope she gets better soon.” The mother says, smiling.
“Thank you. We will be back later to check on her. If she wakes up before then, ask a nurse to page one or all of us.” I say, turning and walking out of the room. I go to the desk and lean on it, exhausted.
“Are you okay?” Mark asks, coming up to me looking worried.
“Yeah. I'm just exhausted” I tell him.
“Give me Lilly and go to an on-call room and get some rest. I'll be in there once I put her back in her room.” He tells me, taking Lilly and pushing me towards an on-call room. As soon as I get
in there, I close the door, and lie down on one of the beds and close my eyes. After a few minutes, I am finally asleep when I feel Mark come in and lay down with me, pulling me towards him and kissing me on the head. That was the last thing I remembered before I drifted off.
