Link stared at Red from where he laid in the tent as the male cooked breakfast for the both of them, his heart and mind screaming many different thoughts at once. He felt numb, empty, maybe it was just like how he remembered himself being... hiding from how much of a burden he felt. But this was different, now he just felt like a complete fake. He couldn't save Past Red... he knew that already but...
He couldn't even save him despite loving him
He couldn't even cry about it anymore, all his tears were gone and just left him numb. Not to mention the fact that he was even questioning his feelings for the Red in front of him now, his own boyfriend. For all he knew... it was all lies that his brain made up for him to cope with the trauma of Past Red's death even after forgetting.
But, Red, his Red as he tried to remind himself, was so perfect... so kind, so loving, even when he was like this, a useless freak that is supposed to save Hyrule and yet can't save the people he holds dear. He leapt out of his skin when Red turned to him calling his name.
"Breakfast is ready!"
Even now, Link felt his heart beating out of his chest for Red, and how he was gently smiling at him. That and the fact that he felt as if he had to at least try and stay strong for him were the only things that coaxed him to get out of the tent and sit down beside his beloved.
"I hope that this isn't too bad... I haven't exactly cooked Pilaf before..." Red chuckled, Link silently nodding in response, staring at the dish that the male had placed on his lap. He took a scoop of the rice in his spoon, gently blowing on it to cool it down before eating it. He let out a gentle sigh, giving a tired smile to Red. "You like it?"
"Yeah... it's really good." Link muttered as he ate. Red grinned before digging into his dish, Link silently stealing glances towards him as he wondered if he should even say anything.
"Hey... Link? You know you can go back to the tent and take a nap if you need... I can tell that you barely got any sleep last night..." Red's voice was as gentle as his expression, the amount of concern he had for him made Link only feel not only worse about himself but also awful for Red and how he was just worrying him at the worst possible time. "I'm fine, Red." Link mumbled but Red only shook his head.
"You have bags under your eyes, Link. And not to mention... the trip up this mountain is going to be long... you need your rest. So, please..." Red was practically begging him, but Link decided to stand his ground, standing up silently and walking towards the tent before starting to take it down while Red yelled at him.
"I don't need sleep right now."
"Link you've only ever had bags under your eyes after Divine Beasts. You know... the places we're in for up to 24 hours or even more in the case of Vah Medoh?"
"Red. I promise you that I am working on the same amount of sleep as you."
Red only sighed, knowing he couldn't really argue with Link. As much as he insisted, Link wasn't going to sleep, and he couldn't force him.
Link turned to him once he has finished dismantling the tent, Red felt himself frown at the lack of the typical teasing victory smile Link would have after their petty disagreements... maybe it was because it felt more serious this time, but it still hurt Red, especially since he wasn't even being his typical self during breakfast. Link seemed to notice his frown and frown himself "What's wrong?"
Red bit his tongue, reminding himself that Link just needed time, the memory seemed to be a rather traumatic one after all. "It's... nothing..." Link seemed unimpressed with the answer, seeming regretful, "Look, Red... I know you're worried after last night but... I'm fine, okay?"
