"i wanted to name you sora, do you like that name?"you traveled through liminal spaces for what felt like both hours and minutes at the same time. long endless hallways, it was impossible to tell if you were making progress because everything was the same no matter where you turned. overturned tables and chairs and a broken clock on the wall, complimented by biblical paintings hanging by a single nail, or just laying on the floor with distinct claw marks in them.
you called and called for yumi but no reply, in fact you actually started using this time to think of a name for your new shadow friend. you looked up and watched the ceiling as you walked, an occasional sun-roof above your head but always with the same distance from the last. everything was the same. even the dark sky behind the glass. no stars, no moon. just void. maybe you were in hell.
"sora.. that's pretty, right? like, the sky..." you hummed in thought and turned to look at your left side. disappointed by the lack of yoshida. it hadn't been long, but you grew used to his company. the civilian sector of the devil hunters commission was actually a lot of fun. you were given a patrol route to follow and do regular people things on until you came across devils in which you'd protect civilians and hold them back. normally, people of your and yoshidas skill level would be full fledge devil hunters, but because of your ages you had to wait.
you turned to your right and were surprised to find a figure beside you. you flinched but relaxed when you noticed it consisted of black matter. your eyes flashed down to your hands, where matter was chipping off of and flowing over to your new friend. "i wanted to name you sora, do you like that name? or should i choose another?" it turned to face you and you noticed its feminine body type. you assumed she was just you, without the limits of the human brain. that's why she could only mimic you when speaking. "thank you." she replied. you smiled and reached for her clawed hand, she gave you a confused look and tilted her head. (or atleast, you assumed she did. she kinda had no face.) with a small smile, you took hold of her clawed hand and intertwined your fingers with hers. she held your hand too, careful not to stab you with her claws. thus you two continued to walk across the liminal rifts.
you talked lightly, though it was hard to make conversation with someone who can only repeat after you. you said a few basic sentences so she would be able to communicate at a base level and tried to only ask yes or no questions that you knew she could answer. despite the similar appearance, she was nothing like yumi. yumi was harsh and mean, and couldn't speak english. she could only screech and yelp in reply, and she was never so gentle. you'd wake up to slashes in your skin from her moving around in her sleep. and when she got angry, she wouldn't hesitate to attack. sora was kinder, with a gentle, protective nature to her. she was careful of your hands and not to hurt you and she was quite good at listening and using your words to talk with you.
you still missed yumi, though. she was your first friend and probably the only thing that's ever loved you. sure, she was rough around the edges. but she was loyal, and she always meant well.
