you opened your eyes to see the familiar creepy eyes of makima.

weirdly enough, it wasn't her. it was a girl with a jellyfish haircut and light blue eyes with the same hypnotic rings in her eyes. "hello, y/n. you haven't forgotten me, right?" that's when the bells rang in your head and things finally clicked into place. you shot up into a sitting position and faced her with a small smile. "mamoru!" she grinned and tucked a hair behind your ear. "yes, that's me. how have you been, my shinki?" you smiled but had a complicated look in your eyes. "things are fine, but i'd much rather have stayed the same as before, and what happened to you? is everything alright?" mamoru gave a resigned smile as she placed a hand on your knee. "the bomb that hit you was from the bomb devil. i think i mentioned, but an interesting phenomenon appeared at the scene. it seems, you're what you humans would call a demi-human." your eyes widened and you remembered a tv screen reporting a video on a "soldier of god", there had only been word of mouth, but there was news of near-human creatures called ajin's. none had been found in japan yet. you gulped and nodded insisting that she go on. "i have an interest in this condition of yours. it seems, not only can you never die, but you have a shadow of your own. i should let you know that this is more of a curse than a favor, if you wish to live you will live as an ajin. however, you are a truly unique human. if you desire to die, as you should've given your humanity, you can. if not, stay with me and i will give you the heart of my shadow, i only ask one thing in exchange." you frantically nodded your head. "without a doubt, anything you need." she smiled and reached out, wrapping her arms around your shoulders and leaning down before pressing a kiss to your forehead.

"i wont take much, just the only thing that makes you human.

your inevitable deaths."

you woke up soon after in a hospital with yoshida cuddled up with a stray cat against your bedside.

if you're at all confused, mamoru is the reaper. think of it as the way people see god, jesus, and the holy spirit. despite being technically different people, they are all the same. mamoru is the reaper and is in charge of the creatures that you struck your initial deal with. she herself isn't the death devil but they share the same memories and appearance.

mamoru was the reaper you spent every day of your life with, but also not. they have the same memories of you and whatnot, but the actual reaper shares no memories with mamoru, which is why shes a bit rude and rough around the edges. but you like it, you always have. she has her own personality and you wouldn't trade her for even the nicest devil on earth. mamoru was your buddy, your sister, the one thing that had ever loved you unconditionally. so you could put up with her pettiness.

this however was interesting. you had never seem such a sinister side to her before, but you supposed it shouldve been expected. life long companion, or not. she is a devil. then again, now neither are you. she mentioned you had a shadow, but aren't you a shadow too?

only you just realized, she wasn't standing awkwardly in the corner of the room, scowling when someone who couldn't see her would walk past. instead of her inky void of a tall slinky body, there was a feminine figure wrapped in bandages of matter. you lifted your arm, propping yourself up to examine them.

"quit putting the moves on me... old lady..."

you shifted back in the hospital bed with wide eyes. 'it spoke?! in my voice!' there was an echo and a static to their tone, as if they were talking through a choppy radio. there was cracks and scratches to its voice but it sounded like a layer of your own voice with another deeper tone echoing beneath it. it moved toward the front of your bed with heavy steps before pausing right at the foot of the bed, leaning over the rail to look you in the eyes.

"what's with that face?..."

'no, not my voice.. it's copying me, like a broken record.' you relaxed a little, reaching out to grab its face with both hands. you gingerly ran your thumbs down its cheeks, black matter shedding off and piling at the hospitals ceiling. it wasn't too similar in appearance to mamoru, but it sure was alike.

"sorry to have caused you so much trouble..."

it finally quit its mocking and vanished, the particles being slowly pulled into the vents as it dispersed into nothing.

its official, you aren't human anymore. your life will never be the same.

and yet, again you couldn't find a care in the world. even when your tribe was slaughtered, when your way of life was taken, when the water began to fill the house, when mamoru and yourself became one, even now, you weren't sad. you couldn't care less. was that odd?

you turned to face the noirette beside you and gave a dutiful flick to his forehead, he snorted and flinched as he woke with a start. he quickly directed a glare in your direction and you could only grin coyly. he rolled his eyes and playfully punched your shoulder, only it wasn't playful at all and that shit hurt like a motherfucker.

"dude?!" you bitched, grabbing your shoulder as you glared at him.

"don't take a hit like that for me ever again, okay idiot?"

you crossed your arms and furrowed your brows at him.

"so you're saying, next time let you get hit by a massive bomb.."

he went in for another punch but you had the foresight to dodge this time.

"yes, that's what i'm saying! getting hit by a bomb is like 100x better than watching someone fight to get air into their lungs because the pain is so intense they can't breathe."

"to be honest, i don't even remember it hurting."

"of course you don't."

"stay with me, and i will give you the heart of my shadow."
