"this isn't fair, chiyo."

you sit comfortably with your hands in your lap on the bed inside of the nurses office waiting for recovery girl to return. she had run a few scans and tests, drew some blood and taken them into the room that was cut off from the area. you assumed it was her office. aizawa was in the room with her, leaving you sitting on the patient bed like a little kid waiting for her parents to finish arguing.

as it turned out, there had been no school in session for today. you were glad because aizawa needed at least a day of rest. you still aren't certain how he managed to convince the doctors to discharge him in that sorry state. regardless, it was convenient because this gave you the opportunity to visit recovery girl earlier in the day.

when the two adults exit her office, aizawa has an unreadable expression on his face. mostly because his entire face is concealed by bandages and you can't see it at all, but his aura is nervous while recovery girl seems equal parts intrigued and resigned.

"miss yūrei..." she says, approaching you. she takes a seat in the stool in front of the bed you sit on, it's so tall that it actually puts her at the height of a regular person once she sits down in it. she hands you a stack of papers, it's a bit tall and as you flip through them you see unimportant things like your blood sugar levels and the iron within your blood. a hand written note at the bottom of one of the pages catches your attention.

corruption level: 008%

you tilt your head a bit, looking up at her silently as you await an explanation. "the 'devil' within your system is taking over. you knew this, right?" you nod your head. "mhm." she continues. "we're calling it 'corruption' because of the way it functions. it's almost like a disease. it's like your biological code is being rewritten by the devil inside you. it seems that since the day you had your heart replaced, it's been spreading at a rapid pace. i don't have any evidence of this, but based on your description of the changes in your abilities i can make an educated guess on that."

she clears her throat a bit, taking the notes from your hands and pointing to the handwritten note.

"as that heart in your chest becomes less of an implant and instead molds to be apart of you, you'll become stronger. you'll start hearing things better, your vision will get sharper. you'll get stronger and faster. these aren't good things, they're symptoms. the more it progresses, the stronger you get. the stronger you get, the less your body is your own. when your corruption raises to 100%, your consciousness will be overwritten and the devil within you will take over. i'm not certain if this means you'll be gone, or if you'll be different. you two might become one, but it's more likely that you'll just disappear."

it isn't what you were expecting, but you aren't really surprised either. you nod in understanding. "if that's the case, why did everything go back to normal in the usj?" you ask, and she sighs softly.

"the thing is... the process of the corruption seemed to have been really slow at first. comparing the vitals i have from today to the vitals i have now, you were further along the corruption then than you are now. that was in a much longer amount of time compared to now."

she places the notes on the table beside her.

"when i said it was like a disease, i mean that because it's evolving alongside you. every death you experienced with the hero commission reset your body. every time you die, it's like your matter is all completely wiped clean. it resets even the smallest impurities, things inside you like a sickness or even a piercing. if it wasn't there when you became an ajin, it'll fade away every time you die."

yumi is oddly silent, but she's here. she's listening, too.

"this reset also resets the clock on your corruption level, but the more frequently you die the more desperate the corruption becomes. it'll become faster after every death. that's why despite your last death being not long ago, you've almost surpassed the corruption levels that you were at when you arrived. this... is sort of a temporary solution. as long as you die before the corruption level reaches 100%, you'll be able to reset back to 0% until eventually the corruption is so fast it's instant. i estimate many deaths before it'd be instant, but not too many before you'd have to reset every couple of days. at that point... it'd be too late."

she hands you a small trinket. you aren't sure what it is, but it seems like a keypass. "you'll bring this to the support course. they're going to make something you can use to... y'know. whenever you need to. for now, try to avoid dying at all costs unless your corruption levels are high. i estimate about a month for your corruption to reach 50%." you nod your head, holding the pass in your hand. "okay."

aizawa seems troubled. "... 'okay'? that's it?" you look up at him, frowning slightly. "what else should i say?" you ask, and he steps forward before recovery girl gives him a look. he sighs defeatedly and hangs his head. "this isn't fair, chiyo." he says, and recovery girl nods. "i know, but this is all we can do for now. this isn't something we can stop." she says, and he sighs. he doesn't seem to be handling this too well.

"for now, view this as a temporary solution. it's an extension of the time on the clock that your consciousness has become. for now, be sure to keep yourself safe. i'd like you to come visit me weekly. i want to know what percentage you're at as often as possible, and i'd like to know what exactly happens at those percentages so it becomes easier to tell how corrupted your physical form is becoming." you nod your head. giving her a smile as you rise to your feet. "thank you, miss recovery girl." she smiles back, wearily. "don't thank me. just take care of yourself." you nod and smile softly.

"i will, thanks."

you walk out alongside aizawa. it's a quiet walk home.

"i know, but this is all we can do for now."
